Special Collections Highlights

Our First Books
What books did Anita Gray, Jeanne Rodger Lane, and Clara Spiegel put into our new Community Library when it opened?
- ‘Degas’ by Daniel Catton Rich (1952)
- ‘Jerry and the Pony Express’ by Sanford Tousey (1943)
- ‘Football the American Intercollegiate Game’ by Parke H. Davis (1911)

What Children’s books have we kept over the years?
We have a number of well-used, well-loved Children’s books. Many have been boxed up for decades, and they are now finding a home in special collections.

The Cook Book
We are honored to house all three volumes, plus the atlas of Captain James Cook’s ‘A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean’, published in 1874.

A Barn Dollhouse
It’s a working barn, with cowboy quarters above the animals – now located at the Children’s Entrance at the top of the stairs!

Audubon Portfolio
We have original prints of ‘Birds of America’ by John James Audubon, stored in our climate-controlled vault. Some of these can be seen (reprinted and framed) throughout the library.
‘Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror’ by John Ashbery
Arion Press set this poem in a circular format. The text is handset in lines that radiate as spokes from a hub holding the page number, so that the pages literally must be turned to be read. The original prints are in various mediums, including lithography, etching, and woodcut.
