Gingerbread Houses with Perla Anguiano

Perla Anguiano is a professional pastry chef and will be leading a class on decorating Gingerbread Houses for tweens and teens.

Perla received her education from the International Culinary School, Le Cordon Bleu and works full time for Sun Valley Resort, based in the Konditorei. Class is FREE. Supplies have been generously donated by Sun Valley Resort.

This class is open to tweens and teens in grades 5 and up. Space is VERY limited and sign-up is REQUIRED. Please be sure you can make the commitment to attend before registering.

Registration opens on Monday, November 30th. Call the library at (208) 726-3493 x2 to reserve a spot.

*CANCELLED* ERC Spring Science Series: The Peregrine Fund

The Environmental Resource Center’s 5th annual Spring Science Series offers exciting and interactive presentations on scientific topics ranging from plant and animal adaptations and life histories, to unique conservation strategies. 

This week of the Spring Science Series, The Peregrine Fund will use live raptors to showcase raptor adaptations, and provide information on the organization’s current and past projects. The Peregrine Fund, based in Boise, works worldwide to prevent raptor extinctions, protect areas of high raptor conservation value, and address landscape-level threats impacting multiple species. The organization was founded in 1970 and has traveled to the Wood River Valley to share their animals and mission many times.

Curtis Evans, Education Coordinator for The Peregrine Fund, will be facilitating the presentation. He is also a raptor trainer and has been recognized by the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators for his work with an American Kestrel.

This program is offered in conjunction with the ERC’s Spring Exploration Series which brings presenters from across the Northwest to all 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms in Blaine County during the school day. This program is FREE, family-friendly and open to the public! Don’t miss your opportunity to learn about the natural world from visiting experts!

Advanced Conversational French

Come practice your French in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. This gathering, intended for intermediate to advanced speakers, will offer the opportunity to converse and share your interest in all things French.

The group will be led by Christine Carney Demment, who holds an undergraduate degree in French, lived in the French Alps for seven years, and has taught French language at the elementary, secondary and university levels.  She looks forward to fostering your conversation skills and interest in French language, food and culture.

Free, and drop-ins are welcome.

WHEN: Thursdays, January 9 – February 13, 2020, 2:00-3:00 pm.

Special Screening: “Judi Dench’s Wild Borneo Adventure”

Join The Community Library for a special screening of Judi Dench’s Wild Borneo Adventure.

In this new ITV documentary series, Dame Judi Dench embarks on a wild adventure to Borneo to explore one of the oldest and most spectacular rainforests, meet its enchanting animals and get a vivid insight into the importance of this rainforest to life on our planet. 

Featuring stunning footage, the series brings to life this incredible rainforest which has some of the most diverse wildlife on the planet and the tallest tropical trees in the world. As she shares her magical wildlife adventure with her chap, naturalist David Mills, they learn how important the rainforest is as the lungs of the world and how the animals are actually helping us by maintaining the health of this unique environment and helping save the planet.

The Library is pleased to present the beginning of this new series, which will air on the Discovery Channel in 2020.

Join us for this special screening, which will be followed with a Q&A with British Academy Award and Emmy winning filmmaker Anthony Geffen, who produced the film.

Craft Workshop: Novel Structure with Brady Udall

Writing a novel, a screenplay, a memoir—or  any long form story—can be a messy and confusing process. This class will offer simple techniques and guiding principles to help you as you craft your next masterpiece. Join The Community Library Writer-In-Residence Brady Udall for this one-time class, which will focus on discussing the craft of novel writing.

Brady Udall is the author of two novels, The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint and The Lonely Polygamist, and a collection of short stories, Letting Loose the Hounds. His work has appeared in The Paris Review, Esquire and elsewhere. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa and currently teaches writing at Boise State University. Brady was appointed Writer-in-Residence of Idaho from 2010 to 2013, and he will be in residence with The Community Library during January and February 2020.

Bob Kustra, the host of Reader’s Corner on Boise State Public Radio, will join us for an evening to discuss his interviews and their issues and ideas that matter today.

He’ll share stories of his interviews with authors, a few previews of interviews to come, and how Reader’s Corner is produced and delivered to radio and podcast listeners.  A promoter and defender of the independent bookstore, Bob will also share his critique of the role Amazon plays in the life of the book and its author.  He will share his experience reading novels of up-and-coming authors, and he’ll provide specific recommendations for reading our way past those post-holiday blues.   

Reader’s Corner is a weekly radio show and podcast hosted by Boise State University President Emeritus & Professor of Public Service Bob Kustra.  Reader’s Corner features lively conversations with leading writers, including many winners of top literary prizes and best-selling authors.
