July 6, 2021 by kmerwin

The theme of the 2015 Family of Woman Film Festival is “Women and Their Dreams” The films that the Community Library will show from its collection of the past seven years of the festival, will feature girls and women who have held their own dreams.

Presented by filmmaker Mohammed Naqvi This stunning Special Emmy winning documentary tells the true story of international human rights icon Mukhtaran Mai, a Pakistani peasant who was gang-raped and publicly shamed in her village, but used her trauma to spark a legal revolution that exposed centuries of brutal tribal conflict and government mismanagement.

BIG SONIA Sneak Peak

July 6, 2021 by kmerwin

Meet local filmmakers Leah Warshawski and Todd Soliday (recently profiled in Sun Valley Magazine’s Winter 2014-15 issue) and learn about their film production company Inflatable Film. They will show a trailer for their last feature film FINDING HILLYWOOD (which will screen in Ketchum in April) and present 10 minutes of exclusive footage from their current feature documentary BIG SONIA.

Standing tall at 4’8′, Sonia Warshawski (89) is a tiny woman with a huge personality. Diva, business owner, “everybody’s grandmother,” and Holocaust survivor – she’s just been served an eviction notice for John’s Tailoring, the last (and most popular) shop left standing in a dying mall in suburban Kansas City. Sonia struggles with retirement, while her life lessons span generations.

Leah and Todd are currently raising funds for post-production and outreach, and looking for Executive Producers for BIG SONIA to help complete the film before Sonia turns 90. Come learn about how to get involved and see some exciting footage shown only at this event. Attendees will receive a special BIG SONIA sewing kit as well!

“Charlie Hebdo: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly” by Jean-Jacques Bohl

July 6, 2021 by kmerwin

The recent tragic events in Paris have made Charlie Hebdo a household name. Charlie Hebdo has been in existence since the late sixties and reflected the French youth’s “Esprit du Temps”: irreverent, anticlerical, antimilitarist, anticapitalist and a taste for raunchiness.

As times changed Charlie Hebdo aimed its secular shock satire at the growing Islamic awareness within the huge French North African immigrant population.

In a broader context, the events surrounding Charlie Hebdo have brought to center stage
the complex and tortuous relationship between France and Islam, a relationship that goes back 1300 years with a great many components.
