“The West Where We Are” Book Club

July 6, 2021 by kmerwin

Join a reading series focused on contemporary fiction of the American West. How is the West evoked in literature that has emerged since the year 2000? The Library’s executive director Jenny Emery Davidson, Ph.D., will lead the discussion of four short and compelling works to challenge how we understand the West: Train Dreams by Denis Johnson, The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, and “Deeper Winter” by Alexander Maksik. The reading series is free and open to all, but advanced registration is required so that you can receive the syllabus ahead of time.

To sign up, email Jenny at jdavidson@comlib.org

Class Schedule:

Thursdays, January 22-February 12

6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Regional History Department

Family of Woman Film Festival: Screening of “Mrs. Goundo’s Daughter”

July 6, 2021 by kmerwin

The theme of the 2015 Family of Woman Film Festival is “Women and Their Dreams” The films that the Community Library will show from its collection of the past seven years of the festival, will feature girls and women who have held their own dreams.

Join us for a free screening of Mrs. Goundo’s Daughter, the true story of a woman seeking political asylum in the United States. If she is sent back to her native Mali, her three-year-old daughter will be genitally mutlilated as she herself was as a child. Filmmakers Barbara Attie and Janet Goldwater, divided their time between covering Mrs. Goundo’s trial in Philadelphia and Mali, where they followed a group of young girls as they were prepared for their initiation into “womanhood”.
