Free Screening of Maria Tatar’s Lecture, ‘The Wolf Trap: Entering the Woods through Fairy Tales’
The Community Library hosts a free screening of Maria Tartar’s lecture, ‘The Wolf Trap: Entering the Woods through Fairy Tales’, presented by Professor Samantha Harvey of Boise State University.
‘Animals are good to think with, as Claude-Lévi Strauss famously told us, and fairy tales confirm that wisdom. Stories from the childhood of culture may have moved into the culture of childhood, but they engage with adult matters, taking up and disturbing the line dividing nature from culture, predator from prey. We will begin with a girl, a wolf, and an encounter in the woods.’
Maria Tatar is the John L. Loeb Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University, where she teaches courses on German cultural studies, folklore, and children’s literature. Her research focuses on the visual and literary culture of Weimar Germany, on fairy tales, and on children’s literature.
Professor Harvey will lead a discussion following the screening.
Free Film Screening of ‘Love Thy Nature’
Join us for a free screening of the film Love Thy Nature hosted by The Sawtooth Society.
Narrated by Liam Neeson, Love Thy Nature is a cinematic journey into the beauty and intimacy of our relationship with the natural world. While our environmental crisis threatens the survival of our species, a renewed connection with nature holds the key to a highly advanced new era.
Following the film, Bas Verheijen will give a short presentation.
