“Iran, ISIS, Sectarianism and the Changing Middle East” by Professor Kenneth Stein

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

In partnership with the Wood River Jewish Community.

During the fifteen years of the 21st century, the Middle East remains awash with change. Autocratic Arab leaders have been pushed from power, some Arab states are imploding. Confessional, tribal, ethnic and religious identities have accompanied fanatical Islam and virulent anti-Semitism.  Sectarian violence abounds and a Muslim cold war has already begun. What can the next president do to manage the difficulties inherent in political Islam, the growth of insurgencies, the unresolved Arab/Palestinian -Israeli conflicts, the weakening of Middle Eastern states, and a revitalized Iran and Russia that seek major roles in determining the region’s future? If we are at a precipice of changing borders and renewed conflicts, how might the Middle East be reconfigured?

Kenneth Stein is Professor of Contemporary Middle Eastern History, Political Science and Israeli Studies at Emory University.

“Winston Churchill and the Civil War” by Lee Pollock

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

July 20, 2016

Winston Churchill was one of the greatest statesmen of modern times, famous for his leadership of Britain in the Second World War and for forging its victorious alliance with the United States.

Churchill was also a renowned orator, writer and historian. Half American himself, he was fascinated from childhood with our greatest conflict, the Civil War. During his long life, he traveled widely visiting the War’s battlefields and analyzing its main events and leading personalities, from Abraham Lincoln to Robert E. Lee. Always interested in the “what might have been” of history, one of his most intriguing articles from the 1930’s was entitled “If Lee Had Not Won the Battle of Gettysburg.”

Join Lee Pollock, Executive Director of The Churchill Centre, as he explores Churchill’s fascination with the Civil War and what it reveals both about his own view of history and about the War itself.

The Royal Larkspur Players Present “Bakersfield Mist”

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

‘Mist’ is a play that asks important questions about art and authenticity…and most importantly, answers them in no uncertain terms! It’s exhilarating in the extreme when a play strikes it rich on every conceivable level as this one does.

Maude is a 50-something unemployed bartender living in a trailer park. She has bought a painting for a few bucks from a thrift store. Despite almost trashing it, she’s now convinced it’s a lost masterpiece by Jackson Pollock worth millions. But when world-class art expert Lionel Percy flies over from New York and arrives at her trailer home in Bakersfield to authenticate the painting, he has no idea what he is about to discover. Inspired by true events involving a female long-haul truck driver and the curator of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, this hilarious and thought-provoking comedy/drama is the genuine article, one of the best plays in years. A hit in New York, London, L.A and elsewhere, we are pleased to be able to present it to a Sun Valley audience for your enjoyment as a staged reading.

This event will be presented free of charge as a fund-raiser for The Community Library; donations always welcome.

“10 Unique Historic Sites to Visit this Summer” by Katherine Kirk

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Katherine Kirk is the Executive Director of the Idaho Heritage Trust and publisher of Bridging the Past, Present, and future: Commemorating 25 years of the Idaho Heritage Trust. The lecture will highlight, from the book, 10 unique historic sites to visit this summer. Historic sites that are off the beaten track from the typical tourist stops. For example, a late 1800’s stone building originally constructed as a general store now serves as a rural Catholic Church. Restored by volunteers and a priest who had previously spent time in northern Africa with the French Legionnaires, a visitor entering the chapel today may feel transported to another time and place, perhaps to a Moorish church in North Africa.

Books will be available onsite for purchase following the lecture.
