Upbeat with Alasdair: Verdi’s Requiem

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The Sun Valley Summer Symphony is excited to announce our next “Upbeat with Alasdair” talk. Music Director Alasdair Neale will provide an insider’s view of the upcoming summer performance of Verdi’s Requiem on Aug. 17, which serves as the celebratory finale for the orchestra-festival season.

Our “Upbeat with Alasdair” talks are a series of adult-education lectures where Maestro Neale offers comprehensive insight into upcoming season performances.

Admission is free, but space is limited for these lively sessions, and the event is often full. Those interested are encouraged to arrive early. Reservations can be made by calling the Symphony office, (208) 622-5607, or by emailing info@svsummersyphony.org.

Earth Day Film Screening

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The Environmental Resource Center (ERC) screens PBS’ newly released Rachel Carson documentary in honor of Earth Day.

Rachel Carson inspired the modern environmental movement through the publication of her 1962 book, Silent Spring. The book warned the American public of the impact of pesticides on the environment and unleashed an extraordinary national debate about science and safety. This 120-minute documentary provides an illuminating and inspiring portrait of a seminal figure whose writings changed the course of our nation and are still highly relevant today.

Before and after the film, ERC staff will be on hand to answer questions about its “Pesticide Action” program which is working to reduce the use of pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers in the Wood River Valley. Additionally, students from the Wood River High School’s W.A.T.E.R. Club (Environmental Club) will provide information on their current project which is focused on native plants and the protection of local pollinators.

A Screening of “Allegro Non Troppo”

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Hosted by Gary Hoffman.

“This is the second of two terrific films I’ve owned for over 40 years from showings at the Las Vegas Foreign Film Society. Both are dedicated to the outstanding musical talents we have in the Wood River Valley; among them Caritas Chorale, The Wood River Orchestra, and The Sun Valley Summer Symphony.

This second Italian film from the 1970’s also deals with an orchestra rehearsal but in a strikingly different way. No surprise there; “Allegro Non Troppo” is an animated fantasy that was inspired by but surpasses Disney’s Fantasia in many respects. It’s creator Bruno Bozzetto has been widely hailed as a more modern and adult-oriented animator than Disney. It’s a terrific tongue-in cheek spoof of Fantasia with wonderful music and animation, including well-known classics by Dvorak, Sibelius, Debussy, Ravel, Vivaldi, and Stravinsky.” -Gary

“City of Rocks Exposed” by Wallace Keck

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

If you know Southern Idaho’s Silent City, you probably think of wagon trains to California, towering granite features, and world-class rock climbing. Park Superintendent Wallace Keck has spent 15 years pointing the camera at its secrets and will share stories behind the scenery. If you have yet to visit the National Reserve and its sister park Castle Rocks State Park, this presentation is essential for travel planning.

Wallace Keck is the Park Superintendent of City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park. He has a B.S. degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management with an emphasis in interpretation from Arkansas Tech University. He has served the public for 33 years, stewarding resources in 6 parks, 5 agencies and 3 states. Wallace, his wife Susan and dog Clancy live in the shadow of Cache Peak north of Almo. When he’s not in the office, you’ll find him with a camera in one hand and a pair of binoculars in the other, chasing birds across the country.

Wallace’s talk will begin at 6. A reception for the City of Rocks exhibit in the lecture hall will take place from 5 to 6, which exhibits the work of the Sun Valley Photography Club: http://www.comlib.org/art-in-the-lecture-room/
