Classes, Discussion Groups, and Workshops

Craft Workshop: Novel Structure with Brady Udall

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Writing a novel, a screenplay, a memoir—or  any long form story—can be a messy and confusing process. This class will offer simple techniques and guiding principles to help you as you craft your next masterpiece. Join The Community Library Writer-In-Residence Brady Udall for this one-time class, which will focus on discussing the craft of novel writing.

Brady Udall is the author of two novels, The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint and The Lonely Polygamist, and a collection of short stories, Letting Loose the Hounds. His work has appeared in The Paris Review, Esquire and elsewhere. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa and currently teaches writing at Boise State University. Brady was appointed Writer-in-Residence of Idaho from 2010 to 2013, and he will be in residence with The Community Library during January and February 2020.

Registration is now full for this workshop. If you would like to be place on a wait list, please contact Martha Williams at mwilliams@comlib.org or 208-806-2621.

Bring your (clean) clothing to this workshop to learn mending basics!

We’ll be on hand with supplies and information to help you learn to fix your own clothes in a social setting. We don’t have tools on hand for making repairs to every clothing item, but will be happy to help you brainstorm ideas.

Join us in the new Idaho Room, part of the new Betty Carr Reading Room.

For all ages from tweens to adults. Questions? Email nlichtenberg@comlib.org

“Pride and Prejudice” Discussion Group

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Join The Community Library for a two-part book group on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Come discuss this classic romantic novel, its characters and themes of morality, familial dedication, class, and self knowledge. We will particularly focus on the often overlooked character of Mary Bennett, the middle of the five sisters whose serious disposition and moral lectures fail to subdue her unruly sisters and mother.

Wednesday, December 11 | 4:00 – 5:30 pm
During our first meeting we’ll enjoy tea and cookies and discuss the novel’s themes and character of Mary Bennett.

Thursday, December 19 | 4:00-5:30 pm
For the second meeting, participants are encouraged to have seen the Company of Fools’ production of Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon. The play, opening December 11, focuses on the ever-dependable Mary, who is growing tired of her role as dutiful middle sister in the face of her siblings’ romantic escapades. When the family visits for Christmas, an unexpected guest sparks Mary’s hopes for independence, an intellectual match — and possibly even love? This charmingly imagined sequel to Jane Austen’s masterwork promises to delight Austen aficionados and new-comers alike. Company of Fools Producing Artistic Director, Scott Palmer, will join us for this conversation.

The discussion group will be led by Martha Williams, Programs and Education Manager at The Community Library.
