Taken in 1999, this image captures a carving by a Peruvian sheepherder of a church and “Julio Mitma Peru 1975” in an Aspen Tree up Neal Canyon North of Ketchum. Tree carvings mark the path of shepherds as they move their flocks of sheep through the mountains. Wendy Warren Collection, F 09071.

Senator Frank Church sits in the middle of this image taken during a Senate Subcommittee meeting on Parks and Recreation open hearings regarding the Sawtooth Range at Sun Valley. Seated with him are Senator Frank E. Moss, and Senator B. Everett Jordan. This meeting and others would eventually lead to the creation of the River of No Return Wilderness in 1980, which would eventually be renamed the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. Charles Dickens heralds the winter solstice season with his five Christmas Novels. Find them in the main floor non-fiction collection. And what are the five Christmas Novels?
After the success attained with A Christmas Carol in 1843 Charles Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840s, maintaining what he called “the Carol philosophy” to “strike a sledgehammer blow” for the poor, uneducated, and repressed.
In typical Dickens fashion he drove his message home with a mixture of humor and good cheer. Margaret Lane points out in her introduction to the Oxford Illustrated Dickens-Christmas Stories “when he had a pill to offer, he confected it expertly with spice and sugar.” Source: The Charles Dickens Page/David A. Circa 1885, this image features a traditional Chinese ceremony taking place up Warm Springs Canyon. This was taken by assayer and photographer Eugene Antz. The Wood River Valley’s Chinese community in the late 1800s worked in the local mines, on railroads, and also managed gardens and restaurants in the area. Jayne A.
