Book Review: Lying Awake
Gold Mine Processing Associate Eric Brown recommends Lying Awake by Mark Salzman.
Lying Awake is ultimately a story about faith.
It’s a present day tale of a nun, Sister John of the Cross, in a Carmelite monastery near Los Angeles. She discovers that she has epilepsy but is troubled that the remedy for her illness will interfere with her spirituality.
Mark Salzman wrote the story with a simple narrative and with an emphasis on prayer. He describes Sister John’s dilemma with sensitivity and with flashbacks of religious life. This story is a poignant reminder of the connection between religion, faith, love, and healthcare.
This book transported me back in time to when my father was in the hospital shortly before his passing. It reminded that healthcare workers are caring and supporting their patient’s families as much as they are the patient.
Hemingway’s Little Wooden Box
This little wooden box and its contents were found inside the Hemingway House when it’s ownership was transferred to The Community Library. Inside are various little objects, including a Dragonfly model dioptric scope which was made by Van Cort Industries in the late 1980s, a little tiny red case with a small charm inside, and two shotgun shells. The little box has a very Hemingway-esque image on the top of a man on horseback fighting a bull.

High School Yearbooks
Did you know that the Center for Regional has yearbooks from Wood River High School and its predecessor Hailey High School? Some yearbooks are held digitally (1964-1980) and can be viewed in the Betty Olsen Carr Reading Room and others we have the physical copies of. We unfortunately don’t have them for every year but do have many of them. And we have some from The Community School.
