Conversations on Hemingway

In 2021, PBS launched a Ken Burns/Kim Novik documentary on the visionary work and turbulent life of Ernest Hemingway. The Community Library participated in several related events that are still available for viewing.

Idaho Public Television and The Community Library, in partnership with PBS, will present the film’s director, Ken Burns, producer Sarah Botstein, and writer Terry Tempest Williams, in a discussion about the writer’s connection to the natural world. The event will feature clips from the upcoming show. The conversation with be moderated by the Library’s executive director, Jenny Emery Davidson.

An original Idaho Public Television production, set largely at the Mary and Ernest Hemingway House stewarded by the Library, this short documentary will explore what Hemingway’s life in Idaho tells us about our state’s cultural landscape. Join us in a live discussion about Idaho’s Hemingway with documentary producer Bill Manny, poet Richard Blanco, Hemingway scholar Stacey Guill, and the Library’s director Jenny Emery Davidson. Many Idahoans are familiar with the general outlines of Ernest Hemingway’s Idaho story: the celebrities, the Sun Valley Resort, his death by suicide at home along the Big Wood River. What is less known is how his time in Idaho influenced the writer’s life, loves and literary output. This panel will explore what Hemingway’s life in Idaho tells us about our state’s cultural landscape.

This 3-part, 6-hour documentary film will examine the visionary work and turbulent life of Ernest Hemingway. The team filmed parts of the documentary in Ketchum at the Hemingway House, and they explored aspects of the Library’s regional history archive for the project. View the program on PBS.
