“How and Why to Talk About Race in Your Classroom” with Dr. Patty Costello

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

In this interactive workshop geared for pre-k through middle school teachers, as well as anyone who works with children in an educational capacity, participants will first learn about the research showing that kids see race from the time they are babies. Next, participants will learn why it’s important to talk about race and the difference between color-blind vs. multicultural approaches to race. Teachers will be introduced to lesson plan ideas on how to talk about race in the classroom. The workshop includes videos, a podcast component, and an interactive application demonstrating the concept of implicit bias.

Dr. Patty Costello lives in Boise, Idaho and grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Minnesota and a BA in Psychology. Her research interests include implicit cognition, attention, and perception. She is the author of the children’s book Catalina and the King’s Wall,  a book about embracing different cultures.
