Dr. John Rose gives a talk on the history of forest fire lookouts on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.
Fire lookouts have been an integral part of the wildfire control system on the forest for nearly a century. Dr. Rose’s talk will look at the different types of historic lookouts, their design origins, and their distribution across the forest. He will also discuss recent work stabilizing Basin Butte Lookout near Stanley and the upcoming work at Morehead and Norton lookouts.
Dr. John Rose is the South Zone Archaeologist on the Salmon-Challis National Forest and he works out of the Forest Service office in Challis. He also serves as the Southern Idaho Director for the Forest Fire Lookout Association.
