Watch on IPTV: “Idaho’s Hemingway”

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Idaho Public Television videographer Jay Krajic films Mary Hemingway’s desk in the Ketchum house in July 2020.

WATCH THE STREAM HERE

Many Idahoans are familiar with the general outlines of Ernest Hemingway’s Idaho story: the celebrities, the PR for the new Sun Valley resort, the death by suicide at his home along the Big Wood River. What is less known is how his time in Idaho influenced the writer’s life, loves and literary output. By talking to writers, students and scholars and by examining the traces of Hemingway that remain in Ketchum, Idaho Public Television explores what Hemingway’s life in Idaho tells us about our state’s cultural landscape, then and now.

The documentary will serve as an Idaho introduction to Ken Burns’ six-hour Hemingway documentary – also including scenes from Ketchum – coming to PBS in April.

“Idaho’s Hemingway”: A Panel Discussion

March 25, 2021

Idaho Public Television videographer Jay Krajic films Mary Hemingway’s desk in the Ketchum house in July 2020.

WATCH THE RECORDING HERE

Many Idahoans are familiar with the general outlines of Ernest Hemingway’s Idaho story: the celebrities, the Sun Valley Resort, his death by suicide at home along the Big Wood River. What is less known is how his time in Idaho influenced the writer’s life, loves and literary output.

Bill Manny, creator of Idaho Public Television’s new short documentary Idaho’s Hemingway, will give an inside look at the making of the film that premiered on March 4.

This live discussion will also feature Richard Blanco, poet and the Library’s 2020 Hemingway Distinguished Lecturer, Stacey Guill, Hemingway scholar and frequent presenter at the Library’s annual Ernest Hemingway Seminar each fall, and Jenny Emery Davidson, the Library’s executive director.

The panel will explore what Hemingway’s life in Idaho tells us about our state’s cultural landscape.

This event is being hosted by Idaho Public Television. Click here to watch or learn more about the Idaho’s Hemingway documentary.

LIVESTREAM – Winter Read Closing

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

WATCH THE PROGRAM

Join us for a virtual closing of the 2021 Winter Read. The Library’s eight Winter Read interns, who are all high school students from area schools–Sun Valley Community School, Wood River High School, The Sage School, and Silver Creek High School–will share their favorite moments from the last few months, and reflect on the questions raised by this year’s community read of Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. We’ll also announce the winners of our Winter Read Challenges!

During the program, we’ll also share a short film prepared by intern Asia Angel. Throughout the Winter Read, Asia asked other interns, Library staff, valley students, and educators to reflect on the role of stories in our lives and how we can each work to make our community and world a better, more equitable place. She’ll share their responses with us as we close out this year’s Winter Read series.

ZOOM – Winter Book Group: “Race through Time”

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The Community Library Winter Book Group: Race through Time

Thursdays, January 21-February 25, 4 to 5 p.m., Zoom

In conjunction with the community-wide read of the novel Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, this year’s Winter Book Group will focus on three books that address the legacy of slavery and also move us through time in challenging ways. We will begin with The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, a memoir from 1845, arguably the most influential slave narrative ever published. Then we will read the science fiction novel Kindred in which a Black woman is pulled back in time from the 1970s to the antebellum period. We will conclude with the nonfiction book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, that investigates how one woman’s DNA has shaped scientific research around the world, without her or her family’s knowledge. The books present us with a variety of literary styles to consider, and various modes for grappling with issues around race, gender, and identity.

January 21     General introduction and first pages of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass*

January 28    The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave by Frederick Douglass*
