Holiday Film Series: A Screening of “Casablanca”

The holidays can at times feel overwhelming, overstimulating, a bit much. Sometimes one needs to escape. During the holidays the library is offering a series of films in the evenings that can help you do just that. We are showing classics, cult classics, and documentaries. 

In Casablanca in December 1941, a cynical American expatriate encounters a former lover, with unforeseen complications in this classic film released 75 years ago last month.

Holiday Film Series: A Screening of ” Mission Galapagos”

A special screening of Mission Galapagos with producer Anthony Geffen. 

Science, wildlife, and nature presenter Liz Bonnin and a team of scientists embark on a mission to an active volcano in search of the elusive pink iguana. A submersible then takes them on the deepest dive ever carried out in the Galapagos Islands in search of new species and finally they see how new science is helping to unlock the mystery of how the marine iguanas are adapting to survive.

An audience Q&A with Geffen will follow the screening.

The holidays can at times feel overwhelming, overstimulating, a bit much. Sometimes one needs to escape. During the holidays the library is offering a series of films in the evenings that can help you do just that. We are showing classics, cult classics, and documentaries. 

Two drifters, of widely varying backgrounds, rustle cattle and try to avoid being caught in contemporary Montana in this 1975 Western cult classic written by Tom McGuane.

Holiday Film Series: A Screening of “Social Studies”

The holidays can at times feel overwhelming, overstimulating, a bit much. Sometimes one needs to escape. During the holidays the library is offering a series of films in the evenings that can help you do just that. We are showing classics, cult classics, and documentaries. 

Photographer Tina Barney is profiled in this documentary following her in a project to capture the lives of Europe’s aristocrats in this 2005 documentary. 

The film introduces you to Tina Barney, who will be in conversation at the library with writer Judith Freeman on December 30.

 

“China in Africa” by Ambassador David Shinn

In partnership with the Boise Committee on Foreign Relations. 

David Shinn received his BA (1963), MA (1964), and PhD (1980) from George Washington University. He has a certificate in African studies from Northwestern University. He served for thirty-seven years in the US Foreign Service with assignments at embassies in Lebanon, Kenya, Tanzania, Mauritania, Cameroon, Sudan and as ambassador to Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. He has been teaching in the Elliott School since 2001 and serves on a number of boards of nongovernmental organizations.

An expert on the Horn of Africa, Dr. Shinn speaks at events around the world. He is the coauthor of China and Africa: A Century of Engagement, the Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia, and has authored numerous articles and book chapters. His research interests include China-Africa relations, East Africa and the Horn, terrorism, Islamic fundamentalism, conflict situations, U.S. policy in Africa, and the African brain drain.

Children’s Holiday Storytelling at the Sun Valley Lodge

Holiday storytelling for children brought to you by Sun Valley Resort and The Community Library. Several different stories will be read over the two hours, so please drop-in at your leisure. Each child will receive a little holiday treat bag when they leave. All are welcome!
