Beyond the Camino: 500 miles later

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Learn about the inspiring 500 mile solo journey “The Camino de Santiago” across Northern Spain that
local Personal Trainer and Nutrition Specialist, Brenda Powell, embarked upon a year ago, and hear how
it has transformed her life. She will share her personal story of transformation: the challenges, pitfalls and inspirations she encountered along the way. Join her as she shares about the interesting history of the Camino and why hundreds of thousands are embarking on this and other spiritual

Brenda will also be previewing a very exciting program and guest speaker who will be coming to Sun Valley in January – Greg Roach.  Greg and Brenda will be co-presenting a forum on “The Alchemy of Sacred Travel” Greg is the owner of SpiritQuest Tours and has spent over 25 years guiding trips to the most sacred sites on the planet.  His dynamic presentations stir the soul and get you excited to plan your own sacred journey!

How to NOT Flunk Retirement with Dr. Pierce Scranton

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Medicine. Law, Architecture: You’ve dedicated your lives to your professions. Yet many remain unprepared or in denial when it’s time to step down. “How to Not Flunk Retirement” is one blueprint for success that creates the strategies in transitioning from your profession to a new life. This lecture will focus on three areas.

  1. Take a hard look at yourself. What are the psychological and practical aspects in determining the right time to step down?
  2. The constant cash flow from being employed is going to vanish. What are the financial requirements for preparing for retirement?
  3. Who do you want to become? Transitioning to life after a busy career.

Doctor Scranton is a Board Certified orthopedic surgeon who trained at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was an Assistant Professor for three years. He joined Orthopedics International in Seattle in 1979 and became the team physician for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, 1980 – 1997. He was President of the NFL’s Physician’s Society in 1997, President of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society in 2001 and served as President of the North American Orthopedic Educational Society from 2006 – 2012. He enjoyed orthopedic practice for 36 years, founding a mission in Vietnam to treat landmine victims and disabled children the last 13 years of practice. He retired to Ketchum, Idaho in 2016. He is the author of “Playing Hurt: Treating the Warriors of the NFL,” (Potomac Press, 2001) and is currently working on a novel.

Digital Citizenship for Families with Paul Zimmerman

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Internet usage in the family can add stress to any parent.  How do we teach good digital citizenship to our kids?  How can we be good stewards of responsible use ourselves?  What kind of family tech-culture are we trying to create in our homes? Safely navigating the Internet seems like an overwhelming task…but it doesn’t have to be!  In this interactive workshop, we break it down this challenge, and find working solutions, in two basic ways – practical tips and mindset.  We will dive into some practical tips for everyday use, but will also talk about changing our mindset from one of stress to one of adaptability.

All children, 9-years old and older, are welcome to join staff in the newly-renovated Children’s Library for story-time, crafts and activities while parents attend the talk.

TV Discussion Group with Mimi Avins: Season One of Ozark

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The golden age of television that has loomed large in entertainment for a number of years has morphed into the era of Too Much Good TV.  How to make sense of it all? The TV Discussion Group, which will meet weekly from January 3rd through January 31st, is a place where TV obsessives and skeptics gather to dissect one season of a prestige series. This time out, the group will analyze the intricate plots and deep character development of season one of “Ozark,” much as a book group critiques a novel. “Ozark” is an Emmy-award winning satirical crime drama starring Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, a couple who move their family to rural Missouri when financial and marital problems precipitate a hasty retreat from Chicago. If you think, as they did, that the Ozarks are a bucolic paradise where frazzled city slickers can breathe easy in the company of down to earth locals, think again.

Ketchum resident Mimi Avins, who covered pop culture in her years as a staff writer for The Los Angeles Times, will lead the discussion. Each session will explore two episodes of the series.  PLEASE WATCH THE FIRST TWO EPISODES PRIOR TO THE FIRST MEETING ON JANUARY 3RD!

“Foreign Aid: Yes, give till it hurts…but who does it benefit?”

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Are you familiar with Non-Governmental-Organizations (NGO’s) operating abroad in developing countries?  Have you always thought that their work was totally selfless and represented charitable work at its highest? Who have you given to, and why…and how do you know that your gift was received, and, for that matter, by the people or places that they were designed to benefit?

The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of the development narrative.  Much good has been done.  However, there are times when the results have been mixed, and in some cases even catastrophic, prompting many developing world leaders to become increasingly vocal in calling for change in how aid is given, received and used. Drawing on perspectives gathered from over 150 interviews shot over 4 years in 20 countries, the documentary Poverty, Inc. explores the hidden side of doing good. From disaster relief to adoptions and agricultural subsidies, Poverty, Inc. follows the butterfly effect of our most well-intentioned efforts, and pulls back the curtain on the poverty industrial complex – the multi-billion dollar market of NGOs, multilateral agencies, and for-profit aid contractors. This begs another important question: are we catalyzing positive development in these communities or are we propagating a system in which the poor stay poor while the rich get hipper?

Ketchum medical missionaries Gary and Connie Hoffman, as well as Idaho State Senator Michelle Stennett, will discuss these very issues using clips from the film as their central text.  The audience will also be encouraged to participate in this important discussion.
