LIVESTREAM – Upbeat with Alasdair: “The Big Picture”

In collaboration with the Sun Valley Music Festival, The Community Library welcomes Maestro Neale for an “Upbeat with Alasdair” talk titled “The Big Picture,” which will explore the ways classical music both celebrates and illustrates the human condition.

This live program will also be recorded for later viewing. 

Special Virtual “Upbeat with Alasdair”

Sun Valley Music Festival Music Director, Alasdair Neale, returns to host his popular “Upbeat with Alasdair” speaking series on Tuesday, May 12.

Co-presented with The Community Library, the live program will feature Music Director Alasdair Neale at his home in San Francisco, joined by Associate Concertmaster Juliana Athayde and Principal Oboe Erik Behr from their home in Rochester, New York. It will be an immersive experience, with familiar interview-style observations on musical subjects paired with stories, a short musical performance, and opportunities to engage with the presenters.

The program will air live at 6:30 PM (MT) on the Festival website: svmusicfestival.org

From the homepage, click “Watch online broadcast.” No special software or technology is needed, other than a device with speakers or earphones that can access the internet, such as a computer, cell phone, or tablet. No sign-up or password is required. This program will not be recorded, so tune in!

Note, you may go to the broadcast as early as 6:15 PM to test your connection and audio. If you are having technical issues, you may contact the Festival office at (208) 622-5607 to have a staff member help get you connected. VIRTUAL – “Beethoven: Anguish and Triumph” with Jan Swafford

In celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday and in partnership with the Sun Valley Music Festival, The Community Library presents a VIRTUAL evening with Jan Swafford, celebrated composer and Beethoven biographer.

Jan Swafford is an American composer and author. His journalism appears regularly in Slate. He is a long-time program writer and preconcert lecturer for the Boston Symphony and has written program notes and essays for the orchestras of Cleveland, Chicago, San Francisco, and Toronto. His music has been played around the country and abroad by ensembles including the symphonies of St. Louis, Indianapolis, and the Dutch Radio; Boston’s new-music groups Musica Viva, Collage, and Dinosaur Annex; and chamber ensembles including the Peabody Trio, the Chamber Orchestra of Tennessee, and the Scott Chamber Players of Indianapolis. Jan earned his Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from Harvard College and his M.M.A. and D.M.A. from the Yale School of Music. He is the author of Charles Ives: A Life with Music, Johannes Brahms: A Biography, Beethoven: Anguish and Triumph, and The Vintage Guide to Classical Music.

Upbeat with Alasdair: Life as a Conductor with Alasdair Neale and Edwin Outwater

Sun Valley Music Festival Music Director, Alasdair Neale, returns to host his popular “Upbeat with Alasdair” speaking series on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. Joining him will be conductor and curator of the upcoming Winter Season, Edwin Outwater, to take us behind the baton and discuss their experiences as conductors.

This program will have a special 7:00 p.m. start time. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

This program will also be live streamed and can be viewed on The Community Library’s LIVESTREAM page, during and after the event.

 

Now entering his 26th year as Music Director of the Sun Valley Music Festival, Alasdair Neale is also Music Director of the Marin Symphony and New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Beyond his leadership in Sun Valley, Connecticut, and the San Francisco Bay Area, Neale has guest-conducted numerous orchestras from around the world to much acclaim. His enthusiastic leadership and approach to music-making unite musicians and audiences alike.

Edwin Outwater has been called “one of the most innovative conductors on the scene today” by Michael Tilson Thomas. Outwater is Music Director Laureate of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and regularly appears with the San Francisco, New World, Chicago, National, and Virginia Symphonies. Along with guest appearances across the globe, he is known for creating concert experiences beyond the mainstream.

Upbeat with Alasdair: Beethoven’s Timeless Genius

Sun Valley Music Festival Music Director, Alasdair Neale, returns to host his popular “Upbeat with Alasdair” speaking series on Tuesday, January 2, 2020. 

This January’s presentation will take a look at the magnificence of Beethoven: “Beethoven’s Timeless Genius.” 

The speaking series is held each year at The Community Library, located at 415 Spruce Ave., Ketchum. It provides an intimate platform for Maestro Neale to share his passion for music-making and his personal take on specific works with the community.

The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free, but space is limited and the event is often full. Those interested are encouraged to make reservations and arrive early. Reservations can be made by emailing or calling the Festival office at info@svmusicfestival.org or 208-622-5607.

This program will be live streamed and can be viewed on our LIVESTREAM site, during the event and after. An overflow area will also be available.
