The Environmental Resource Center’s 5th annual Spring Science Series offers exciting and interactive presentations on scientific topics ranging from plant and animal adaptations and life histories, to unique conservation strategies.  

This week of the Spring Science Series we welcome Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO). CRMO is an amazing place filled with volcanoes and lava flows with one of the harshest environments on the face of the planet.  It is a young volcanic terrain where the rocks, some only 2000 years old, slowly break down to form soil. Heated by the sun, surface temperatures can exceed 150F in the summer and temperatures can be < -30F with lots of snow in winter.  Little moisture falls in the summer--CRMO is classified as a high desert.  How do animals like marmot, pika, and pronghorn survive and thrive in such an environment? This program is offered in conjunction with the ERC’s Spring Exploration Series which brings presenters from across the Northwest to all 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms in Blaine County during the school day. The Environmental Resource Center’s 5th annual Spring Science Series offers exciting and interactive presentations on scientific topics ranging from plant and animal adaptations and life histories, to unique conservation strategies. 

This week staff from the Idaho Museum of Natural History (IMNH) will present a Mammoth Murder Mystery! Virginia Jones of the IMNH will facilitate a crime scene investigation working to solve the murder mystery of a baby mammoth. Learn more about ice age animals and life on earth 10,000 years ago. IMNH is located on the Idaho State University Campus in Pocatello. 

The presentation will be in the Children’s Library Treehouse room.

This program is offered in conjunction with the ERC’s Spring Exploration Series which brings presenters from across the Northwest to all 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms in Blaine County during the school day. This program is FREE, family-friendly and open to the public! The Environmental Resource Center’s 5th annual Spring Science Series offers exciting and interactive presentations on scientific topics ranging from plant and animal adaptations and life histories, to unique conservation strategies. 

This week of the Spring Science Series features Alana Jensen from the Veolia ESR Program. The ESR team is committed to furthering educational outreach relating to the environmental surveillance and wildlife use at the Idaho National Laboratory. 

This presentation will share weather basics through exciting and interactive demonstrations.

The presentation will be in the Children’s Library Treehouse room.

*CANCELLED* ERC Spring Science Series: Zoo Idaho – Native Animals

The Environmental Resource Center’s 5th annual Spring Science Series offers exciting and interactive presentations on scientific topics ranging from plant and animal adaptations and life histories, to unique conservation strategies. 

This week staff from Zoo Idaho will present on native animals with some of their live residents. Past animal visitors have included a tortoise, skunk, black-footed ferret, gopher snake, boreal chorus frog and more! 

Zoo Idaho, located in Pocatello, is situated on 25 acres and is home to nearly 150 animals. The Zoo, founded in 1932, is home to many animals of the intermountain west who were orphaned or injured and would have died in the wild.

Rachel Shearouse, Zoo Idaho’s Curator of Education, has a background in environmental education and has been presenting at the Spring Science Series for the past three years. 

This program is offered in conjunction with the ERC’s Spring Exploration Series which brings presenters from across the Northwest to all 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms in Blaine County during the school day. ERC Winter Bird Walk with Poo Wright-Pulliam

Join the Environmental Resource Center (ERC) and local birding extraordinaire Poo Wright-Pulliam for an introductory presentation and birding walk about local winter birds. Poo will introduce common winter birds in Ketchum during a presentation then lead the group on a walk around Ketchum to look for these species.

The presentation will begin at 10:30 am in the Lecture Hall. A walk around Ketchum to observe local species will directly follow. Participants are encouraged to attend both the presentation and walk.

There is a suggested donation of $10/ERC member and $20/non-member. Pre-registration is required.

The Environmental Resource Center’s 5th annual Spring Science Series offers exciting and interactive presentations on scientific topics ranging from plant and animal adaptations and life histories, to unique conservation strategies. 

This week of the Spring Science Series, The Peregrine Fund will use live raptors to showcase raptor adaptations, and provide information on the organization’s current and past projects. The Peregrine Fund, based in Boise, works worldwide to prevent raptor extinctions, protect areas of high raptor conservation value, and address landscape-level threats impacting multiple species. The organization was founded in 1970 and has traveled to the Wood River Valley to share their animals and mission many times.

Curtis Evans, Education Coordinator for The Peregrine Fund, will be facilitating the presentation. He is also a raptor trainer and has been recognized by the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators for his work with an American Kestrel.

This program is offered in conjunction with the ERC’s Spring Exploration Series which brings presenters from across the Northwest to all 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms in Blaine County during the school day.
