Free Screening of Maria Tatar’s Lecture, ‘The Wolf Trap: Entering the Woods through Fairy Tales’

July 6, 2021 by kmerwin

The Community Library hosts a free screening of Maria Tartar’s lecture, ‘The Wolf Trap: Entering the Woods through Fairy Tales’, presented by Professor Samantha Harvey of Boise State University.

‘Animals are good to think with, as Claude-Lévi Strauss famously told us, and fairy tales confirm that wisdom. Stories from the childhood of culture may have moved into the culture of childhood, but they engage with adult matters, taking up and disturbing the line dividing nature from culture, predator from prey. We will begin with a girl, a wolf, and an encounter in the woods.’

Maria Tatar is the John L. Loeb Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University, where she teaches courses on German cultural studies, folklore, and children’s literature. Her research focuses on the visual and literary culture of Weimar Germany, on fairy tales, and on children’s literature.

Professor Harvey will lead a discussion following the screening.

Weird Dam Stories! Presented by Jamee Fiore of the State Historical Society

July 6, 2021 by kmerwin

Weird Dam Stories: Idaho’s foundation for settlement, industry, agriculture, and more has relied heavily on dams. The history of dams in Idaho is varied and there are numerous purposes, uses, and types. Some of the most fascinating engineering feats in Idaho have been accomplished through the development of dams. As dams developed throughout the state, small mishaps led to weird stories and instances related to Idaho dams. Two examples of weird dam stories are the Breech of the Teton Dam, where an entire vicinity was wiped out, and an opposite scenario where the entire City of American Falls was lifted from the ground and moved in order to accommodate the reservoir. Come hear about these (and more!) interesting and weird dam stories.
