“Seed: The Future of Food” by Bill McDorman
After an exciting and productive inaugural year, the regional seed conservation nonprofit Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance (RMSA) is celebrating with an event at The Community Library in Ketchum. Gardeners, seed savers, and the general public are invited to come learn about the local seed movement that is taking root in communities across the Rocky Mountain region. The Library recently became the new home of the Wood River Seed Library.
Founder Bill McDorman will give a presentation titled “Seed: The Future of Food”, which will explore the many benefits of seed saving—from economic opportunities and sustainability to social value and community wellbeing. RMSA will also share with attendees its many accomplishments during the last year and present opportunities for the community to get involved.
The Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening seed sovereignty and food security in the region through education, advocacy, and network building. Since its founding last May, the group has spearheaded several local seed initiatives, such as launching a Seed Stewards program, which inspires and equips individuals to grow and save seed varieties; establishing a partnership with the Sawtooth Botanical Garden in Ketchum to develop a “Mother Seed Vault,” which aims to preserve unique, regionally adapted seed varieties; and teaching an innovative and acclaimed series of Seed School courses, which train people in the art, science, and business of seed saving for community resiliency.
Following the presentation, libations and snacks will be served. For more information or questions regarding the Rocky Mountain Seed Alliance, contact Belle Starr: belle@rockymountainseeds.org.

Book Summary:
The Wood River Valley before it was Sun Valley!
Nellie Burns, photographer, leaves Chicago in the early 1920s to find adventure and a career in the West. She lands in Ketchum, Idaho, armed with her large format camera. After photographing moonshadows on snow, she stumbles onto a not quite deserted house and a black dog she names Moonshine. She also discovers and photographs a dead body. When the body disappears and her negatives are stolen, she joins the chase to solve the mystery and find her negatives. Rosy, a one-eyed miner, reluctantly guides her in the search. Moonshine joins in as Nellie’s guardian.
A Basque sheriff crosses words and actions with Nellie. A sheep rancher with a particular dislike of Rosy and the sheriff charges Nellie with interference. The last Chinese residents in town suspect Nellie herself of murder. Nellie’s impulsive nature brings her to a second body, a near drowning, an explosion in a darkroom, and terror in a mine.
Moonshadows is a taut and enigmatic historical mystery with passionate characters, each hiding a secret. Set against wintry small towns and back country Idaho, Nellie’s and Moonshine’s explorations reveal a web of revenge, opium addiction, obsessive love and loss, and a haunting story of devotion.

JCF Mythological RoundTable® Group of Ketchum, ID
JCF Mythological RoundTable® Group of Ketchum, ID Inaugural Meeting featuring short excerpts from the film Finding Joe by Patrick Takaya Solomon, followed by group discussion.
A Mythological RoundTable ® Group (MRT) is a gathering of people drawn together by a deep and abiding interest in all things mythological. Much like the Round Table of yore, it is a place where individual and community come together – a place to play, plan, create, partake in ritual, and share tales of our own quests with companions well met. But JCF Mythological RoundTable ® Groups do more than just enrich the individual; they also offer the opportunity to introduce the work of Joseph Campbell to the wider community, carrying his vision off the page and out into the real world.
Jan Peppler will be leading the JCF Mythological RoundTable® Group of Ketchum. Jan is completing her Ph.D. in Mythological Studies with an emphasis in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute, where the Joseph Campbell Library and OPUS Archives are housed. She received her M.A. from Pacifica Graduate Institute and her B.A. from DePaul University with a focus in Sacred Mythology. Most recently she has presented on mythological themes at the Popular Culture / American Culture National Conference and at the American Academy of Religion Western Conference.
