“Wilderness: The Next Conversation” by Sally Ferguson

Wilderness Stewardship in the Frank Church River of No Return and Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Areas.

The Frank Church River of No Return and Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness areas comprise the largest wilderness in the lower 48 states. This 4 million acre wilderness complex holds rugged, far-flung landscapes as well as the Selway and Salmon River systems. Sally Ferguson, Executive Director of the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation, will talk about the importance and the impacts of wilderness stewardship in the Frank Church and Selway Bitterroot Wilderness areas.

A Reading by Annick Smith

Annick Smith reads from her latest book Crossing the Plains with Bruno as part of the library’s “The West Where We Are Series.” The reading will be followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Annick Smith is a writer and filmmaker from western Montana. Her books include: Homestead, Big Bluestem, In This We Are Native, and Crossing the Plains with Bruno. Annick’s nature essays and travel articles have appeared in such publications as Orion, Outside, Audubon, National Geo Traveler, Travel & Leisure, and The New York Times. Smith’s most recent book is a memoir, road trip, dog book, Crossing the Plains with Bruno.

Join the Sun Valley Summer Symphony as Music Director Alasdair Neale shares how he is preparing to conduct the epic Symphony No. 3. Mahler’s third is the longest symphony in the standard repertoire and with two choruses and a mezzo soprano, it is sure to be a finale to remember.

A Conversation with Judith Freeman

Library executive director, Jenny Emery Davidson, in conversation with author Judith Freeman about her new memoir The Latter Days.

The conversation will be followed by a Q&A and a book signing.

The Latter Days recounts the path the author took, sometimes unwittingly, out of her Mormon upbringing and through a thicket of profound difficulties to become a writer.

“Conversations with Exceptional Women” 2016, Annual Conference with the Alturas Institute

The Alturas Institute’s annual, “Conversations with Exceptional Women,” returns to The Community Library, September 22-23, 2016. For registration and a full list of speakers go to www.alturasinstitute.com. Tickets for the two-day event are $85. The conference features luminaries from the worlds of business, film, the arts, academia, journalism, government and sports, bringing together extraordinary women to discuss the challenges and success stories that have accompanied their rise to prominence. This event provides the public with a rare opportunity to engage with a wide range of exemplary leaders in a relaxed, intimate setting. The theme of this year’s program is “What is Success?”

Speakers include:

Gina Bennett, author, CIA Counterterrorism Analyst, who first warned of the menace of Osama bin Laden

Mary Stuart Masterson, award-winning film and stage actress, advocate for women’s rights

Dr. Joanne Freeman, author, award-winning historian at Yale University

Maria Giese, prize-winning film director, author, advocate for gender equity in Hollywood, subject of four documentaries
