A Talk by Tim Kopra, NASA Astronaut

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The Dent Conference, an annual gathering dedicated to those who are “making a dent in the universe”, is sponsoring the talk.

Timothy L. Kopra returned from the International Space Station on June 19, after serving as a flight engineer on Expedition 46 and commander of Expedition 47.  He is also a veteran of Expedition 20.  For that mission, he launched with the STS-127 crew and returned to Earth after a 2-month stay with the crew of STS‑128.  Selected as an astronaut in 2000, the Austin, Texas native was also in the U.S. Army where he served as commander and Operations Officer of the attack helicopter company, Developmental Test Director for the Comanche helicopter program, in addition to attending U.S. Naval Test Pilot School among other duties.

Tim’s talk will focus on his experiences onboard the ISS – including his time performing spacewalks — as well as his education and training in preparation for his current role. Since the International Space Station is a multi-nation effort, Tim will also discuss the importance of teamwork in making the ISS a successful operation.

In addition, Dawn Kopra, wife of Col. Kopra will also speak to how she and Tim work as a team despite long periods of time apart, and managing the inherent stresses of such perilous work.

“The Impeachment Power in History and Law: Purposes, Politics and Prospects.” by Dr. David Adler

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

This talk, by Dr. David Adler, president of the Alturas Institute and constitutional scholar, explores the origins and practice of the impeachment power, from the Constitutional Convention through its discussion and use in impeachment efforts against Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, among others. This discussion probes the concept of impeachable offenses—treason, bribery and high crimes and misdemeanors—in historical context and addresses presidential actions that might warrant impeachment.

Goat and Llama Packing 101

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

In the summer of 2016, backcountry adventurers Bob Jonas (founder of Sun Valley Trekking Co and Wild Gift.org) and Sarah Michael (County Commissioner 2001-2008) rented 2 pack goats in June for a 6 backpacking day trip from Fairfield to Baker Lake. Then in July, they test drove 2 rented llamas for a 7 day traverse of the Pioneer Mts from Trail Creek Summit to Copper Basin. As “aging” backpackers, Bob and Sarah have had enough of lugging 50 lbs on their backs. The summer experiment with these pack animals stemmed from the desire to extend their years traveling in Idaho’s Wilderness.

This slide show and story will enhance the community’s cultural quality of life by giving practical information for novices who are thinking about using pack animals for backcountry travel. It will appeal to families who want to take their kids camping away from a trailhead and will appeal to backpackers who love exploring the backcountry but no longer want to carry their tents, sleeping bags, camping stove, air mattress, and food on their backs.

Bureau of Land Management Public Meeting

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Challis Field Office (CFO) and Salmon-Challis National Forest (SCNF) have developed a draft plan for the Jim McClure-Jerry Peak (JMJP) Wilderness and are hosting a public meeting to obtain feedback and comments. This meeting will provide a formal opportunity for individuals to meet agency management, review plan documents and ask questions.

The Wilderness Act provides a mandate for agencies to preserve wilderness character and instructs them to develop a plan, within the parameters set forth in the legislation, for future management actions. The JMJP Wilderness is the easternmost of the three wilderness areas created under Cong. Simpson’s legislation. The JMJP area includes BLM-managed lands as well as Salmon-Challis Forest lands, and therefore the JMJP wilderness plan will be developed jointly by the BLM and the Forest Service. Following the scoping period, the USFS and BLM will revise the Wilderness Management Plan based on input they receive and will develop an environmental assessment. Subsequently, the revised Plan and environmental assessment will be provided for public comment; anticipated for late fall 2017
