“My Old Man and the Mountain” with Leif Whittaker

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Leif Whittaker speaks about his new book, My Old Man and the Mountain.

In 1963, the world followed the first American Mount Everest Expedition, and watched as “Big Jim” Whittaker became the first American to stand on top of the world. He returned home a hero. My Old Man and the Mountain is Leif Whittaker’s engaging and humorous story of what it was like to “grow up Whittaker,” as the youngest son of Jim Whittaker and Dianne Roberts, and amid an extended family of accomplished climbers. Readers learn of his first adventures with family in the Olympic Mountains and on Mount Rainier; his close, yet at times competitive, relationship with his brother Joss; his battle with a serious back injury; and his efforts to stand apart from his father’s legacy.

A Conversation with Nick Neely, Author of “Coast Range”

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The library hosts a conversation with local author Nick Neely, about his new book, Coast Range.

Coast: the edge of land, or conversely the edge of sea. Range: a measure between limits, or the scope or territory of a thing. Coast Range, the debut collection of essays from writer Nick Neely, meticulously and thoughtfully dwells on these intersections and much more. The book’s title refers to the region in which these essays are set: the California and Oregon coastal ranges. In deeply moving prose equal parts exhilarating and pensive, each essay explores an iconic organism (a few geologic), so that, on the whole, the collection becomes a curiosity cabinet that freshly embodies this Pacific Northwest landscape.

Earth Day Seed, Garden and Local Food Faire

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Join the Wood River Seed Library and several other environmental, garden and local food organizations as we celebrate the health and well-being of our beautiful planet. During the Faire, local growers will be present to share locally grown seeds, gardening information, and ecologically relevant services and events planned for the summer in the Wood River Valley. Locally sourced foods, beverages and music will again be a feature of this year’s Earth Day celebration. Seeds that remain after this annual Earth Day exchange will be placed into the seed cabinet located in the Resource Room at the Ketchum Community Library cabinet for local gardeners who could not attend the event. There is no charge for seeds given out at the exchange and all Wood River Valley gardener’s are invited to bring locally saved seeds, potted plants and starts to share with the community.

A Conversation with Emily Ruskovich, Author of “Idaho”

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The Community Library hosts a conversation with author Emily Ruskovich on her much-anticipated and acclaimed new novel, Idaho.

About the book:

FROM O. HENRY-AWARD WINNING AUTHOR EMILY RUSKOVICH COMES A STUNNING DEBUT NOVEL ABOUT LOVE AND SACRIFICE, FAMILY AND FRIENDSHIP, THE VIOLENCE OF MEMORY AND THE EQUAL VIOLENCE OF ITS LOSS.
Ann and Wade have carved out a life for themselves from a rugged landscape in northern Idaho, where they are bound together by more than love. With her husband’s memory fading, Ann attempts to piece together the truth of what happened to Wade’s first wife and to their daughters. In a story written in exquisite prose and told from multiple perspectives—including Ann, Wade, and Wade’s first wife Jenny, now serving a life sentence in prison—we gradually learn of the mysterious and shocking act that fractured Wade and Jenny’s lives, of the love and compassion that brought Ann and Wade together, and of the memories that reverberate through the lives of every character in Idaho.

EMILY RUSKOVICH GREW UP IN THE IDAHO PANHANDLE, ON HOODOO MOUNTAIN. HER FICTION HAS APPEARED IN ZOETROPE, ONE STORY, AND THE VIRGINIA QUARTERLY REVIEW. A WINNER OF A 2015 O. HENRY AWARD AND A GRADUATE OF THE IOWA WRITER’S WORKSHOP, SHE CURRENTLY TEACHES CREATIVE WRITING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER, BUT WILL BE JOINING THE FACULTY AT BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY IN THE FALL OF 2017. IDAHO IS HER FIRST NOVEL
