July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

WATCH THE PROGRAM

Author Leslie K. Barry will join us to discuss her new novel, Newark Minutemen, an untold story about a Jewish boxer who goes undercover for the mob and FBI to save America from Nazis during the Great Depression. The novel is based on the real-life experiences of Barry’s uncle, a Newark Minuteman boxer, and was pieced together from first-hand accounts, FBI reports, and boxes of undercover source material.

During the program we’ll hold a drawing for our virtual audience to win a copy of the book!

Leslie K. Barry is a screenwriter, author and executive producer. She has worked for major entertainment companies including Turner Broadcasting, Hasbro/Parker Brothers, Mattel, and Mindscape Video Games, and for eShop, Lotus Development, and AOL. A graduate of James Madison University, she lives in Tiburon, California, and spends time in Sun Valley and Maryland.

ZOOM – “Hemingway and the Natural World”: A Discussion with Ken Burns, Sarah Botstein, and Terry Tempest Williams

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

WATCH THE RECORDING

A new documentary series directed by award-winning filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, HEMINGWAY, airs this April, exploring the life and work of the legendary writer and his enduring influence on literature and culture. The three-part, six-hour film series comes to PBS April 5-7. You can read more about the upcoming series and watch the trailer here.

Ahead of the new series, join The Community Library and Idaho Public Television, in partnership with PBS, for a discussion on “Hemingway and the Natural World.” The program will include Ken Burns, producer Sarah Botstein, and writer Terry Tempest Williams, who was the Library’s 2019 Hemingway Distinguished Lecturer. “Idaho’s Hemingway”: A Panel Discussion

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

March 25, 2021

Idaho Public Television videographer Jay Krajic films Mary Hemingway’s desk in the Ketchum house in July 2020.

WATCH THE RECORDING HERE

Many Idahoans are familiar with the general outlines of Ernest Hemingway’s Idaho story: the celebrities, the Sun Valley Resort, his death by suicide at home along the Big Wood River. What is less known is how his time in Idaho influenced the writer’s life, loves and literary output.

Bill Manny, creator of Idaho Public Television’s new short documentary Idaho’s Hemingway, will give an inside look at the making of the film that premiered on March 4.

This live discussion will also feature Richard Blanco, poet and the Library’s 2020 Hemingway Distinguished Lecturer, Stacey Guill, Hemingway scholar and frequent presenter at the Library’s annual Ernest Hemingway Seminar each fall, and Jenny Emery Davidson, the Library’s executive director.

The panel will explore what Hemingway’s life in Idaho tells us about our state’s cultural landscape.

This event is being hosted by Idaho Public Television. Click here to watch or learn more about the Idaho’s Hemingway documentary.

LIVESTREAM – Winter Read Closing

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

WATCH THE PROGRAM

Join us for a virtual closing of the 2021 Winter Read. The Library’s eight Winter Read interns, who are all high school students from area schools–Sun Valley Community School, Wood River High School, The Sage School, and Silver Creek High School–will share their favorite moments from the last few months, and reflect on the questions raised by this year’s community read of Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. We’ll also announce the winners of our Winter Read Challenges!

During the program, we’ll also share a short film prepared by intern Asia Angel. Throughout the Winter Read, Asia asked other interns, Library staff, valley students, and educators to reflect on the role of stories in our lives and how we can each work to make our community and world a better, more equitable place. She’ll share their responses with us as we close out this year’s Winter Read series.
