Gorongosa: Park and People

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Join Sun Valley resident Greg Carr and Dominique Goncalves, a young Mozambican scientist, for a “sneak preview” of a new film that explores the challenges facing wildlife conservationists in Gorongosa National Park, in Mozambique, as they try to balance the needs of one of Africa’s last remaining wilderness areas with the needs of the human communities around the Park.

Named as one of National Geographic’s Last Wild Places, Gorongosa will be featured in a major article in the May 2019 issue of National Geographic magazine. After a decade of renewed protection, Gorongosa’s large animal population has increased 10-fold. The Idaho-based Greg Carr Foundation is co-funding and co-managing this extraordinary wildlife restoration success story.

While Gorongosa has become one of Africa’s most celebrated conservation success stories, the work the team does outside the Park is even more critical. By bringing health care, agriculture support, and girls’ education to surrounding communities, Gorongosa is becoming a new model for other Protected Areas in Africa. And the Gorongosa team is discovering that women and girls are a powerful force that can lift their communities out of poverty, thereby easing human pressure on the Park.

Through the lens of Gorongosa, we explore of the most urgent questions of our time: what will it take to improve the lives of Africa’s rural population and save Africa’s remaining wild places? The film reframes and redefines the idea of a national park in Africa and puts Africans, especially women and girls, front and center in the fight to save their natural heritage. Ultimately, this is a story of hope.

Kayaking Patagonia’s Rivers and Lakes: How they are impacted by recent global energy initiatives

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Join legendary kayaker, Chris Spelius to learn about the latest threats from the mining and energy sectors, as well as consider the global energy initiatives that have had a direct impact on Patagonia’s eco-system and culture…and hear some amazing stories while you are at it!

Chris Spelius kayaked and guided rafts on the Colorado River while attending the University of Utah in the mid 70’s. After graduating with a degree in Biology, he moved east to the Nantahala Outdoor Center, where he was a paddling instructor and trained for national and international kayak competitions.

Besides kayaking on the U.S. Olympic Team in the 1984 Olympics, Spelius has won several national championships and was a medalist in the ’91 World Playboating Championships. Spelius was also the first kayaker to descend the Niagara Gorge, beneath Niagara Falls, and has various first descents in Chile.

Spelius has been featured in Outside, Men’s Journal, Discovery Channel, and the television shows Extremists, Team Timex’s PaddleQuest, and ABC’s American Sportsman. He was selected as one of the “Legends in Paddling” and as one of the “Most Notable Paddlers of the Century” by Paddler magazine. Spelius has taught kayaking clinics around the world and has been featured in numerous paddling instruction videos including Retendo and

Kayaker’s Edge. He hosted Kayaking 101 on cable TV and worked as a boat designer and consultant for Dagger Canoe Company.

Spelius first visited Chile in 1980. He later coached on a grant from the International Olympic Committee to help develop kayaking as an Olympic sport in Chile. Awed by its beauty, challenge, and playfulness, Spelius was the first to run commercial trips on the Futaleufu River in 1986. Spelius is founder of Expediciones Chile, now celebrating its 30th year of adventure trips in Patagonia.

Spelius is married and has a daughter. His family lives for 6 months of the year on the Futaleufu River, and for the other 6 months in the USA. Spelius is dedicated to protecting free-flowing rivers, is active in international river conservation, and is currently presenting multimedia presentations worldwide.

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Meet up with other seed and gardening enthusiasts to celebrate the end of the growing season at the 5th annual Fall gathering of Wood River Seed Library. This annual event involves the cleaning and packing of seeds from the year’s bounty — all are encouraged to bring and share seeds they have saved! Your seed donations make next year’s offerings possible.

This year’s special guest is Grandmother Flordemayo, a member of the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, who visits us from Estancia, New Mexico. We are blessed to receive her blessing of our seed bounty at this festive gathering next Tuesday evening.
