“Giving Done Right” with Phil Buchanan

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

In collaboration with the Spur Community Foundation, The Community Library welcomes Phil Buchanan for a special presentation on philanthropy. The presentation will be followed by a book signing, and copies of Buchanan’s book, Giving Done Right: Effective Philanthropy and Making Every Dollar Count, will be available for free to all attendees courtesy of the Spur Community Foundation.

Phil Buchanan, president of Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP), is a passionate advocate for the importance of philanthropy and the nonprofit sector and deeply committed to the cause of helping foundations and individual donors to maximize their impact. Hired in 2001 as the organization’s first chief executive, Buchanan has led the growth of CEP into the leading provider of data and insight on philanthropic effectiveness. CEP has been widely credited with bringing the voices of stakeholders to funders and with contributing to an increased emphasis on key elements of effectiveness.

In addition to Giving Done Right, released in 2019, Buchanan is co-author of many CEP research reports, a columnist for The Chronicle of Philanthropy, and a frequent blogger for the CEP Blog. Phil is also co-founder of YouthTruth, an initiative of CEP’s designed to harness student perceptions to help educators and funders accelerate improvements in K–12 schools and classrooms. In 2016, he was named the Nonprofit Times “influencer of the year.” Phil serves on the boards of directors of Philanthropy Massachusetts and the National Council on Aging.

Let’s Build a Future for All Children with Jamie Vollmer

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The old saying, “it takes a village,” applies to many aspects of community, and particularly education. To advance dialogue around the support children need and are being provided, both inside and outside of the public education system, the Community Library and the Blaine Country School District (BCSD) present an evening with Jamie Vollmer.

This program will be live streamed and can be viewed on The Community Library’s LIVESTREAM page during and after the event.

Jamie Vollmer is an award-winning champion of public education. He is president of Vollmer, Inc., and Director of the Community Engagement Project. In both roles, he works to halt the erosion of public trust and build support for America’s public schools. Following careers in law and manufacturing, Jamie entered the PreK-12 arena in 1988, when he was asked to become a member of the nationally recognized Iowa Business and Education Roundtable. In 1990, he changed careers to become the Roundtable’s Executive Director. Although he entered this position as a harsh critic, with the help of teachers, administrators, Board members, and support staff across the country, Jamie has become an articulate friend and defender of America’s public schools.

Over the last thirty years, he has worked with hundreds of school districts, Chambers of Commerce, education associations, and foundations to help build school-community partnerships that increase student success. His speeches and workshops combine statistics, logic, and humor to encourage people work together to create schools that unfold the full potential of every child. Jamie is the creator and producer of the video series, The Great Conversation™, and he is the author of Schools Cannot Do It Alone, proclaimed by the American School Board Journal to be one of the “top ten books of the year.” Jamie has also written and produced the videos, The Ever Increasing Burden on America’s Public Schools, Why Our Schools Need to Change, and Teachers are Heroes. He has been named a Friend of Public Education in both Texas and Ohio. He received the Learning and Liberty award from the National School Public Relations Association for his efforts to strengthen school/community partnerships.

During his visit to the Wood River Valley, Vollmer will also be participating in events with the Hailey Chamber of Commerce, Hunger Coalition, and St. Luke’s Wood River Valley to aid discussion in how the next generation succeeds.

“War Changes Everything” a reading with Neil Brookshire

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

January 3, 2020

Join The Community Library for a reading of a play-in-progress with actor and writer Neil Brookshire.

Inspired by research for an acting part, Neil contacted long time friend, Colin, to discuss his military experiences, and the challenges and differences of before and after war. Further conversations led to the development a one-person play based on many of Colin’s stories from his time as a medic in the Army, exploring how a “new normal” takes hold of the lives of those in combat, and by extension, everyone around them.

Neil Brookshire is an actor, visual artist, and filmmaker. Most recently, he played Mr. Darcy in Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley with Company of Fools. He is also the founder of Dirt Hills Productions, which produces short films and audio material. He has a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Boise State University and an MFA in Acting from Northern Illinois University. He lives in Wisconsin.
