Around the World in Lit Film: Luis Buñuel’s “The Exterminating Angel”
A group of high-society friends are invited to a mansion for dinner and inexplicably find themselves unable to leave in Luis Buñuel’s daring masterpiece The Exterminating Angel (El ángel exterminador). Made just one year after his international sensation Viridiana, this film, full of eerie, comic absurdity, furthers Buñuel’s wicked takedown of the rituals and dependencies of the frivolous upper classes.

Family of Woman Film Festival: Screening of “Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame”
The theme of the 2015 Family of Woman Film Festival is “Women and Their Dreams” The films that the Community Library will show from its collection of the past seven years of the festival, will feature girls and women who have held their own dreams.
Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame
Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame is a dramatic feature-length film from Afghanistan. Amidst the rubble from statues of Buddha blown up by the Taliban, poor families live in caves at the foot of the cliffs. Baktay, a six-year-old Afghan girl is challenged to go to school by her neighbor’s son who proudly reads his lessons. Finding the money to buy a precious notebook and taking her mother’s lipstick for a pencil, Baktay sets out. On her way, she is harassed by boys playing games that mimic the terrible violence they have witnessed. They take her prisoner and threaten to stone her. They turn pages of her notebook into paper American bombers, which they shoot with their stick guns. Will Baktay be able to escape these war games and reach the school? This beautifully shot metaphor of the reality women faced under the Taliban is even more extraordinary in that its director was a 19-year-old Iranian woman.
