“The Seed Story: When, How and Why We Save Seeds” with John Caccia

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Local seed saver John Caccia of the Wood River Seed Library will presenter the event.

Over the next 20 years, 80% of seed diversity is expected to be lost, according to some estimates. Seed saving and libraries are part of a grass-roots effort to reverse this trend. Locally, the Wood River Seed Library works to get people involved through seed exchanges and educational programs. Seed library users can acquire free seeds and are encouraged to bring back saved seeds at the end of the season.

All interested are invited to attend this free event, which will be held outdoors at the Farm, a community growing center owned and managed by The Hunger Coalition. The Farm is located directly east of the Wood River High School football stadium. The Wood River Seed Library is housed at The Community Library in Ketchum, where local and aspiring gardeners can learn about and actively participate in seed saving.

Seed Library “Brown Bag” Gathering

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

The Wood River Seed Library is hosting a “Brown Bag” lunch-time gathering next Tuesday, June 5th, from noon to 1 at The Community Library. We hope to gather outside under the blossoming crabapple tree, weather permitting. Aspiring and seasoned gardeners can join in by asking questions of our expert seed saver John Caccia and master gardener Manon Gaudreau. There will be lots of FREE seeds to take home and try in your Wood River Valley gardens. You will also learn about the ancient art of seed saving and how local efforts have blossomed into tens of thousands of locally gathered and dispersed seeds. Bring a sack lunch if you like — we will have fresh lemonade!

Sexual Harassment Training with the Advocates

July 7, 2021 by kmerwin

Join Tricia Swartling, CEO, and Darrel Harris, Social Change Coordinator of the Advocates for a training session on sexual harassment awareness.

It seems like every day there are new allegations of sexual harassment in politics, the media, and everywhere. The recent outpouring of sexual harassment and assault allegations has helped expose high-profile predators, but even more importantly, it has helped expose the culture of secrecy that shielded them. Tricia and Darrell will be talking about what sexual harassment looks like, cultural practices that perpetuate it, what to do if you are harassed, and what we can all do to create a safe culture.
