Firefly July: A Year of Very Short Poems

December 8, 2021 by kmerwin

A journey through the year with a collection of short poems by great poets, such as Emily Dickenson, Carl Sandburg, and William Carlos Williams. Find it in the Children’s Library.

Celebrated poet and anthologist Paul B. Janeczko pairs with Caldecott Honoree Melissa Sweet for a collection of short poems to sample and savor.

It only takes a few words, if they’re the right words, to create a strong image. Whether listened to in the comfort of a cozy lap or read independently, the thirty-six very short poems in this collection remind readers young and old that a few perfect words and pictures can make the world glow. Selected by acclaimed poet Paul B. Janeczko and gorgeously illustrated by Melissa Sweet, Firefly July: A Year of Very Short Poems invites children to sample poems throughout the four seasons.

Charles Dickens’ Five Christmas Novels

December 8, 2021 by kmerwin

Charles Dickens heralds the winter solstice season with his five Christmas Novels. Find them in the main floor non-fiction collection. And what are the five Christmas Novels?

  • A Christmas Carol
  • The Chimes
  • The Cricket on the Hearth
  • The Battle of Life
  • The Haunted Man

After the success attained with A Christmas Carol in 1843 Charles Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840s, maintaining what he called “the Carol philosophy” to “strike a sledgehammer blow” for the poor, uneducated, and repressed.

In typical Dickens fashion he drove his message home with a mixture of humor and good cheer. Margaret Lane points out in her introduction to the Oxford Illustrated Dickens-Christmas Stories “when he had a pill to offer, he confected it expertly with spice and sugar.” Source: The Charles Dickens Page/David A. Perdue

Suit of Lights

December 8, 2021 by kmerwin

This spectacular Suit of Lights was worn by legendary Spanish Bullfighter Antonio Ordóñez. It was purchased by Ernest Hemingway—who was a close friend of Ordóñez—during Hemingway’s “Dangerous Summer” of 1959, when he was following the bullfighting circuits.

Matadors were superstitious about wearing costumes with blood stains on them, such as this one. David Meeker Collection.
