The Little Prince

August 26, 2021 by dcampbell

The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupéry

I am Skade. I live in Hailey, ID with my mom, dad, brother and dog. I like to bike, swim and play basketball in my free time.

The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupéry is a classic story about a man that crashes his plane in a desert as he is repairing his plane he meets a little prince with golden hair. The little prince is from a small planet with a rose and three volcanoes. The little prince has traveled from planet to planet meeting unique people. The people are described by their flaws: the king, the banker and the lamplighter.

Each individual views their world and the stars differently. The man that crashed his plane is very thirsty and suggests that they look for a well in the desert. They eventually find the  well and the man is no longer thirsty. On the way to the well, the Little Prince meets a fox.

The fox teaches him what it means to be tamed. The fox describes that by telling the little prince that you need to make that individual feel special. The Little Prince realizes that the rose on his planet is special and that he needs to care for it, so he returns to his planet. Antoine De Saint-Exupéry talks a lot about stars and how they have different meanings to people. This is a good book for people that like to read classic, short books.

Always and Forever, Laura Jean

Always and Forever, Laura Jean by Jenny Han

My name is Skade. I am a high schooler. I live in Hailey, ID with my mom, dad, brother and dog. I like to bike, swim and play basketball in my free time.

Lara Jean is in a great place with her boyfriend Peter K. but, it doesn’t stay like that for long. When college acceptance letters roll in, Peter and Lara Jean have a plan to go to UVA. However, they discovered that they’re heading in different directions. Lara Jean got accepted into William and Mary and Peter is going to UVA. They both discuss a long-distance relationship. They came up with a plan. For sophomore year of college, Lara Jean will transfer to UVA. That plan goes downhill after Lara Jean got accepted into UNC. With all of the events that are going on they have been busy. Lara Jean’s dad is making a major commitment: marrying the girl he has been dating for the past 6 months.

This romance novels really drew me in. There are two other books in this series: To all the Boys I’ve Loved Before and P.S. I Still Love You. Those are also great great romance novels that you won’t want to put down. I recommend this book for ages 12-17 who like romance novels. Also, there are two out of three movies on Netflix. You have to read the books in order to know what is going.

I Survived the American Revolution, 1776

August 24, 2021 by dcampbell

I Survived the American Revolution, 1776 by Lauren Tarshis

My name is Slader. My favorite things to do is to play baseball, and watch my favorite movies. I am a 12 year old and in 7th grade.

I am going to be reviewing the I Survived The American Revolution, 1776. This book was written by Lauren Tarshis who is a very good author. This book is full of intense and suspenseful parts. For example, Nathaniel gets caught in the middle of a live gunfight. That is one of the reasons that it is so good, it keeps you interested the whole time. I would recommend this book if you are in 6th grade. This is a very short book with 144 pages. This is a good book for when you just want to read something quick and easy. The genre of this book is Historical Fiction. This isn’t only fun to read, but it teaches you some history.

This story is told through the perspective of Nathaniel Fox, an eleven-year-old boy who gets caught in the middle of the Battle of Brooklyn, the largest battle fought during the American Revolution. I would also recommend this book if you are super into history. As I told  you earlier, it’s a fun way to learn. If you read 1 hour a day, like I do, you will get this done in about two days. I read this when I was in 6th grade. This novel has won the Golden Kite award and many others. I had a lot of fun reading this novel and I think you will too. If you enjoy this book, Lauren Tarshis wrote a whole series.

Once Upon a Marigold

August 23, 2021 by dcampbell

Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris

My name is Elizabeth. I love reading, and my favorite book is My Sister’s Keeper. I am in the 8th grade and enjoy dance.

Once upon a Marigold is a book written by Jean Ferris. The plot is about a boy named Christopher who is raised by a Troll named Edric. Christopher grows up and he looks upon the castle across the river. He notices that there is a Princess who lives there and her name is Marigold. Christopher notices that no one ever touches Marigold, except her father and Christopher finds this a little suspicious. He notices that no one else touches her, not even her maids.

Edric encourages Chris to go work at the castle so he can grow up and become independent, but as Chris gets into some trouble, Edric begins to realize that he may have made a mistake making Chris leave him. Though Chris has a great time at the castle, he uncovers a few secrets of the family. He learns what happens behind the scenes of the royal family. They aren’t a perfect family like they act for their subjects. This book is one of the best I have ever read. It is suspenseful, and comedic. Throughout the book, you get to see into the real royal family, as well as how Marigold and Chris mature. There is a lot of feelings that develop throughout the plot, and it was a super great book. Although it was a little immature for my age, it was a fun read and a good pastime.

Delirium

August 22, 2021 by dcampbell

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

My name is Kaia and I am in high school. I enjoy reading, being outdoors, and rainy days where I can curl up with a good book.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver is about a girl named Lena who lives in Portland Oregon. Since her mom died of amor deliria nervosa aka love she has been counting down the days until she can be cured. In order for Lena to be placed in a marriage she has to pass her evaluation, which gets interrupted by the Invalids. That is when she first sets eyes on him, a boy who seemed to have come with the invalids. Lena is very shaken up by this encounter but she tries to stop thinking about it. Until she and her best friend Hanna go for a run and stumble upon the boy. This story follows Lena and this mysterious boy and how not everything is not what it seems and that just because everyone says one thing does not mean that it is right.

This book shows that even though something can cause pain the pain makes everything worthwhile. The book is funny and heart wrenching all at the same time, all while teaching you valuable lessons. I would highly recommend this book for grades 7 and up because it has some strong points of view on some sensitive topics. This book is book one out of three; out of all of the books I have read since the beginning of 2020 this is already one of my top 5 favorites.

A Night Divided

August 21, 2021 by dcampbell

A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen

My name is Madeline. I am in middle school and enjoy playing the violin, ice skating and reading good books!

A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen is an enthralling historical fiction story told through the eyes of a young girl who recounts her family’s sufferings and courage during the time of the Berlin Wall.

The tensions between East and West Germany are quickly mounting, and eight-year-old Gerta’s family, who lives in the Soviet sector are watching with concern. Yet, they do not have the courage to leave their home and friends behind. One night, their neighbor comes to their apartment with an urgent message, “You must leave, NOW. A barrier between us and the West may be put up any day.” After hearing the warning, the family decides to send their father and middle brother to the West in search of work before moving.

They are not able to carry out their plans, however.  For that very night, the wall is put up, separating the family.  Their father and middle brother are free, and Gerta, her oldest brother, and mother are trapped in East Berlin. Four years later Gerta is twelve, and most people have adjusted to the wall, but not her. Every day she watches the wall and looks for any sign of her father. One day, she spots him doing a dance they used to do together when she was a little girl. Gerta at first believes he is simply trying to bring a smile to her face, but soon realizes the innocent dance is a secret message, telling her to dig to freedom.

This book is an exciting page turner, focusing on the courage ordinary people had to show in everyday life. I recommend this book for ages twelve and up.
