Everything, Everything

October 30, 2021 by dcampbell

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

Hi, I am Sarah. I am fourteen years old and an avid reader; it is one of my favorite things to do. Inspired by authors’ creations of magnificent places and surprising havens built by simple letters, I aspire to be an author and, meanwhile, nurture the love to write.

Madeline has read more books that you. It doesn’t matter how many you’ve read. She’s read more. Heaven knows she’s had the time.

Maddy has SCIT, the bubble-baby syndrome, a disease as rare as it is famous. Basically, she is allergic to anything and everything. Anything – the chemicals in a cleaner, the spice in her soup, the dust in the closet – anything could trigger a deadly attack. And so she never leaves the house, which is equipped with state-of-the-art air filters and purifiers and sealed windows so nothing dangerous ever enters.

She hasn’t left her house in seventeen years.

She will never feel the grass under her feet and the wind in her hair, the summer sun on her cheek. She will never meet anyone or touch anyone or kiss anyone – she never has and never will.

Then Olly moves in next door. Olly becomes an obsession, and to Maddy the enigma, a very foreign and exciting thing. Because Maddy knows that you can’t read the future or what it has to bring, but you can predict some things. For example, Maddy is almost positively going to fall in love with Olly. It’s absolutely, positively going to be a big blow-up-in-your-face disaster.

But the longer Maddy lives safe and sound and isolated, the more she realizes how much she’s willing to risk. After seventeen years with nobody but her mother and caretaker for company, Olly – that intrepid and unpredictable and exciting boy next door – is the trigger that starts a chain of audacious and risky new adventures.

Nicola Yoon weaves a poignant and heartbreaking and beautifully structured story about young love, and what you’re willing to risk to experience it.

Frankly in Love

Frankly in Love by David Yoon

Hi, I am Sarah. I am fourteen years old and an avid reader; it is one of my favorite things to do. Inspired by authors’ creations of magnificent places and surprising havens built by simple letters, I aspire to be an author and, meanwhile, nurture the love to write.

Frank Li has two names: there’s Frank Li, his American name, which everyone calls him. Frank Li has seven letters, a lucky number in America. Then there’s Sung-Min Li, his Korean name, which has nine letters (a lucky number in Korea). Nobody calls him that.

Frank is a Korean-American senior in high school and self-described nerd. He has a nice, middle-class American life with his nice American name – and yet his parents still expect him to end up with a nice Korean girl from another perfect Korean family.

This poses a bit of a problem, since Korean-Americans make up about one percent of the population, twelve percent of that girls his age, leaving him with only one eligible girl about every three square miles. That’s not even considering whether or not he could even like said girl.

This problem gets even worse when he starts dating Brit Means, a girl from his class who is funny and nerdy, who makes him laugh like no one else and makes him feel better about himself. Brit Means, his dream girl… who is white.

As he manages his dating life under the fear of being disowned, he comes up with a plan with family friend, Joy Song, who has a similar problem. Together, they create a fool-proof fake-dating scheme to please their parents and go out with the people they actually like. Nothing could possibly go wrong… right?

David Yoon transitions beautifully between humor, young love, and powerful questions about family, race, and what is worth risking. He poses queries about the things that keep us apart, and in the end, whether they really matter that much when there are much more important things to cherish.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

October 28, 2021 by dcampbell

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Hi, I’m McCallen. I like skiing and basketball.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a really good book. I would definitely recommend reading it. I like it because the drawings are amazing, and it’s really funny.

For a quick summary of the book: It’s about two middle school kids that love to have fun, and mess around at school. Middle school is tough and they face many challenges like getting in trouble and then blaming stuff on each other. One middle school thing they hate and are very scared of is the dreaded cheese touch. The cheese touch is a piece of cheese on the school basketball court that is very disgusting. It has been there for years. If someone touches the cheese they have the cheese touch. Someone can give the dreaded cheese touch to you. If you have the cheese touch everyone avoids you, and you can’t be by anyone. I enjoyed this book, and I recommend you read it. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a whole series of books by Jeff Kinney and they are all funny.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

October 28, 2021 by dcampbell

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling

I am Elizabeth. I love reading, and my favorite book is My Sister’s Keeper. I am in the 8th grade and enjoy dance.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is written by J.K. Rowling. It is the second book in the Harry Potter series. It is not my favorite book in the series, but it is still pretty good. In this book, you get to see a lot more into the characters and their backstories.

The plot is about Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, and there is a lot of speculation about Voldemort. Voldemort is the antagonist (or the bad guy) of the Harry Potter Series. Voldemort wants all of the power in the magical world and to get it he has to kill Harry Potter and everyone who is still good. He finds a way for his younger self to petrify students and he kidnaps one of the students into the chamber of secrets. This leads Harry Potter and his friends to find clues and defeat Voldemort with a new teacher named Lockhart.

One of the characters we are introduced to is named Dobby. Dobby is a house-elf, which is basically a servant. At the end of the book, Harry tricks Lockhart, Dobbys owner, into freeing Dobby. This is a great moment for the readers because it is a really happy moment. This book was fun to read because the characters had a lot more depth, and we got introduced to a lot of new places and items in the wizarding world. I did enjoy reading this book, and I think that it is very important to the entire plotline of the Harry Potter series.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

October 27, 2021 by dcampbell

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

My name is Elizabeth. I love reading, and my favorite book is My Sister’s Keeper. I am in the 8th grade and enjoy dance.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is written by J.K. Rowling. It is the third book in the Harry Potter series. The plot of this book is about an escaped prisoner from the high-security wizarding world prison, named Azkaban. Everyone is worried that the escaped prisoner is trying to come to Hogwarts so he can kill Harry Potter. All of the dark wizards want to kill Harry Potter because he is one of the most powerful wizards in the wizarding world. It is Harry Potter’s third year at Hogwarts, and we learn a lot about student life in this book.

My favorite part of the book is when we are introduced to Hogsmeade. Hogsmeade is a smaller village near Hogwarts that the third-year students can visit with a parent’s permission. It is very cool and we get to visit a super fun candy shop called HoneyDukes with all of the students. Overall I really enjoyed this book because the readers already know about the backstory of a lot of the characters, and we got to experience a lot more with the students. The escaped prisoner has his mind set on killing Harry Potter. He is working with Voldemort, and since Voldemort couldn’t kill Harry Potter, he thinks that maybe he should see if someone else can. Harry has to work with his friends again so he can protect himself. I think this book is really good, and I would say it is a vital part of the Harry Potter series.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

October 26, 2021 by dcampbell

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

My name is Elizabeth. I love reading, and my favorite book is My Sister’s Keeper. I am in the 8th grade and enjoy dance.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is written by J.K. Rowling. It is the first book in the famous Harry Potter series. I love this book for a lot of reasons, but the main one is that it introduces the reader to the magical world of Harry Potter. Rowling uses a lot of descriptions for all of the characters and places, and it creates a wonderful foundation for all of the other books. She has really amazing word building.

In this book, the main character Harry Potter learns that he is a wizard and that he must attend a witchcraft and wizardry school, named Hogwarts, to learn about his powers. He has to learn everything about the new magical world, and this helps the reader understand it as well. The plot is about the antagonist of the magical world, named Voldemort, trying to kill Harry Potter. Voldemort wants to kill Harry Potter because Harry is so powerful. Harry has to find ways to defeat Voldemort so he can be safe. This book is one of my favorites of the seven in the series because it is really an introduction to Hogwarts and the wizarding world. My favorite part is all of the animals and pets that we get introduced to through the story. I also love all of the characters and the backstories that we learn about. This is one of my favorite series that I’ve read, and I recommend all kids and adults read the Harry Potter series.
