A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park
Hi, my name is Kaitlyn and some kinds of books I like to read are fantasy, Sci-fi, and adventure. I like writing and hope you will like my submission.
A Long Walk to Water is a book about perseverance, and bravery. It is also a true story.
The book follows the main character, Salva, who escapes from his ‘war torn village’ to a refugee camp in 1985. At the start of the chapters, you get a perspective from a young girl named Nya who lived farther ahead on time at 2009. But one similarity stays, and that is they both are living in Sudan. Nya must walk 8 hours every day to get water for her family. She doesn’t have time for school because of how long it takes to get there.
Both Nya and Salva face challenges. Although Salva gets a lot more time in the book and Nya only gets 1-2 pages a chapter. I think it’s very interesting and fun. It can be very suspenseful at some parts but ultimately ends with a happy ending. It’s very comforting and kind of sad how you get to watch Salva grow up in the refugee camps. He does escape to America though and starts a fund-raiser for suffering kids in Africa.
I was astonished when Salva came back at the end of the book to build the well in Nya’s village, he then went on to build a hospital, school, and more in her village which was really sweet. It also got me thinking, how many other villages has he done this for? But otherwise, I am glad that this was a real story because it was really sweet in the end. But it’s crazy how someone could go through all that and still live to tell the tale. I loved this book and would definitely recommend to someone.
