The Talk by Darrin Bell
I am Thijs. I enjoy reading (maybe a little too much) and being outdoors. I have a younger brother and my favorite dessert is root beer floats.
Darrin Bell’s book The Talk is a very moving piece of work that really dives deep into racism and his life journey. It connects these two through stories that can be both funny and sad. It shows how growing up as an African American affects your life. The book shows how the tone of your skin can shape a whole other life for you. “The Talk” is when parents tell their kids about racism and explain what it is and its history in our country. They tell them this because they want their children to be educated about this so they can grow up safely and help make the world a better place.
Darrin Bell believes every parent should read this book to their kid or have “The Talk” with them so one day they can use this knowledge to not be naïve about the situation and so they can help in the fight against racism. In the book it goes through many past events of police brutality such as Rodney King and George Floyd. The fact that Darrin Bell could connect all of this into his experiences through a book that has pictures and is like a comic is amazing. I recommend that you read this book and share it with others to help spread the message. The more people know about racism the more they can help fight against it.
