The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen
My name is Bria, and I am going into 7th grade. I love to read as well as ski, swim, and dance.
“On your marks, set,”….BANG!
Just like that, we’re off, I feel alive with wind going through my hair and my legs smooth and good form. I hear the cheers at the finish, then I’m woken up and realize it’s a dream. I am left to face the painful reality that I will never be able to run again. I’m now paralyzed and don’t have half of my right leg. Running was everything to me, now that it is not a part of my life anymore, it’s like trying to find myself again. I’m told I’ll walk again on a prosthetic limb, but it isn’t the same.
The Running Dream is about Jessica, a high school student who was paralyzed in a tragic car accident riding home from a track meet. Jessica has to learn to live her life again, but all people see is her disability not her. Luckily, Jessica gets to know Rosa, a girl with cerebral palsy who’s never gotten a chance to feel the wind through her hair. Rosa helps Jessica see things differently, to be more grateful, and find her spirit again. Will Jessica fight through it all? Fortunately, she’s not fighting alone; she has her family and friends.
The Running Dream is an inspiring story that tells a story from a different view. It is full of surprises and action. I really enjoyed reading this book, it’s an action-packed book. It teaches you what it feels like to be in her shoes.
