The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
Hi, I’m Dash and I’m in 8th grade. In my spare time, I like to read, play tennis, hike, bike, and play ultimate frisbee. I’m 14 years old.
The 5th Wave is a moving story about a teenage girl (Cassie) in a catastrophic situation: aliens have come to earth, and they are in the process of taking over the planet. Filled with heart wrenching flashbacks of the different characters’ lives before The Others (aliens) came, this book is a love story, a science fiction novel, and a disturbing look into what happens when you take away people’s humanity. The only reason Cassie keeps going is because of the person that means the most to her, her little brother Sammy. For Sammy, Cassie will do anything, even if she does not know if he is alive. And then she meets a mysterious alluring boy named Evan Walker. Together, they devise a plan to get Sammy back from the Others, although Evan is doubtful if Sammy is even alive. Despite this, Cassie continues to hope against hope that somehow she and Evan will be able to fix things.
Written in a macabre yet poetic style, this book is one of the most enjoyable reads I have ever had. I hope that Rick Yancey continues to write because he clearly has a gift for it. This book is the first in a series, and I would highly recommend it to people around my age or a little older (maybe 15 or 16).
