Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
My name is Callan and I am entering 8th grade, currently living in Sun Valley. I enjoy activities including gymnastics, ski racing, soccer, tennis, and many other sports.
Shatter Me is a deep, emotional book that I enjoyed reading immensely. The novel starts in an asylum. Juliet was taken there and away from her family because she killed an 8-year-old boy in the grocery store. To understand why that happened, you have to start from the beginning. Juliet Ferrars was born with what most would call a disease. She could not touch anyone without causing excruciating pain. She was studied for years until scientists and doctors decided they would never figure out what was wrong with her. One day in the store, when she was 14, she witnessed a small boy trip and fall. She felt the urge to help him up. Forgetting her lethal touch, she picked him up. He started screaming, then crumpled, dead.
After 264 days Juliet is taken out of her cell by a 19-year-old boy named Warner. He is the leader of sector 45 and wants to use her ability as a weapon against sector 45’s enemies.
Juliet receives food, dresses, a warm bed, but she still refuses. She meets a soldier named Adam, who she starts dating. They both realize that they have to get out, and soon.
They escape, but not before Juliet finds out that not only Adam can touch her with no pain, but so can Warner. Once Juliet and Adam escape, they go to his house to hide. Juliet meets another fellow soldier of Adam’s, named Kenji. He takes them to an underground rebellion hideout, Omega Point. In Omega Point, Juliet finds out that she is not the only one with “powers.” She then starts training to be ready to take down sector 45 with the rest of the rebellion.
Julia must work on accepting her deadly skin. She realizes that it is part of who she is, and she will never be able to change that. She realizes that even though she may be dangerous there are people in the world that still care about her and love her for who she is. She decides that she will train to make her “powers” stronger so that she will win when the war starts. This book is part of a 7 book series.
