Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a great book that I recommend for anyone who likes books about kids going through middle school. It’s about a 10-year-old boy named Auggie, who’s starting school for the first time ever. But not just school: middle school. Auggie must get used to being in a new place, while dealing with multiple challenges. For example, lots of people are afraid of him because he has multiple facial differences. Also, it’s hard not to do anything when you hear people talking about you in the hallways. No matter what, Auggie perseveres through it all. His life changes when he and his classmates all go on an outdoor trip, and Auggie runs into trouble. However, he comes back as one of the coolest kids in school.
I especially liked how the book was written from different perspectives, so that you could understand what each kid truly thinks about Auggie. For example, it was written from the perspective of his sister, and some of his classmates, such as Jack Will and Summer. In all, Wonder is a sad story, but it’s very well written, and it ends with a happy ending. I recommend it for kids who like a challenging story that ends in a clear and confident way.
