The Scarlet Pimpernel is a novel by Baroness Orczy. This book can be described as melodramatic, semi-suspenseful, and romantic. This novel doesn’t have a set speed; it can be very fast paced but then slow down dramatically as well. There were some good twists and shocking moments. Though, for the most part, the characters were the most memorable. Because the book is set in France during the French Revolution, the novel has a dramatic atmosphere that enhances the plot.
The story follows Marguerite Blakeney, a respected woman living in England. The book also has a mysterious person known as the Scarlet Pimpernel. He gained a name for himself by doing risky missions to help people escape the Reign of Terror. As the book goes on, more and more people join the hunt for the Scarlet Pimpernel, and Marguerite is blackmailed and must face difficult choices. The more tensions rise in this novel, the more secrets and misunderstandings affect relationships. In my opinion, this book builds suspense without revealing too much too quickly.
Personally, The Scarlett Pimpernel wasn’t my favorite book. For me, the language was too old-timey, and the book was slow and confusing at times. Despite my criticisms, I truly do understand why this book stayed popular for so many years. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy old-time historical fiction, adventure, and mystery.
