Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Hi, I am Advik. I am in 10th grade. I love to swim, bike, watch TV, hang out with friends and much more.
I read Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. Shadow and Bone is a book you simply will not put down. It’s a captivating fantasy novel that is full of magic, unexpected twists and turns, and danger. I loved how Bardugo created such deep character development, world-building, and imagery portrayed in this book; it helped me visualize it, making me feel like I was watching a movie in my head instead of reading.
This book follows Alina Starkov, a seemingly normal mapmaker in the war-torn land of Ravka. Ravka is split by the Shadow Fold, a dark, dangerous stretch of land filled with demons called volcra. When Alina and her best friend Mal cross the Shadow Fold for the first time for a military mission, they discover Alina is a Sun Summoner, a power only spoken of in myths and legends. Alina is instantly taken to Os Alta, the capital of Ravka, where she trains with the Grisha, the elite soldiers of Ravka. During her time there, Alina meets the Darkling, a mysterious yet powerful man. He believes that if used correctly, Alina’s power could remove the Shadow Fold forever. As time passes, Alina realizes that people are not as they seem, and everyone has secrets.
Shadow and Bone is a gritty, action-packed, and fast-paced book that will keep you hooked. I think this book is an amazing start to a fantasy series, and I recommend this book for anyone who likes fantasy for ages 15 and up.
