Raeghen Peavey, Director of Gold Mine Stores, recommends River of Death by Alistair Maclean.

This thrilling adventure story was first published in 1981. It is an excellent novel from beginning to end— full of adventure, intrigue, and excitement. The reader is transported into a tale with several members of an expedition as they seek the Lost City of the Amazons. The good news is they find it in the rain forest of Brazil. And of course, the unwelcome news is…
…they also find former Nazi soldiers, hostile native tribes and descendants from the long, lost Amazonian tribe.
The story has some characteristics of Indian Jones, but this story follows a more believable plot. Many of the members of this expedition have buried secrets and many are working for various government intelligence agencies. One is working to capture former Nazis; another is trying to preserve the Lost City’s treasures and yet another is trying to save the Amazonian tribe from contamination and elimination by foreign contact.
The setting and journey of the novel is harsh and full of dangers.
Deep inside Brazil’s Mato Grasso area are anacondas, leopards, jumping spiders that attack at a whim, alligators, treacherous rivers, high waterfalls and fast-moving rapids. To make matters worse, there are native tribes that practice cannibalism.
River of Death is a quick read at just over 200 pages and highly recommended. So, sit back and enjoy the adventure.
