If I were to describe Pretty Little Liars: Killer in one word, it would be “unique.” It effortlessly blends a dark, thrilling mystery with a world of glamorous teens and scandalous drama. The chapters are fast-paced, and the writing style makes it impossible to get bored with each chapter switching between the POV’s of the four protagonists, Aria Montgomery, Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, and Emily Fields.
The core mystery of the series is the tragic death of Alison DiLaurentis, whose disappearance shattered the group. Now, three years later they are slowly being brought together because a new “A” is terrorizing them with anonymous text messages while Ali’s suspected killer remains at large. Each girl wants to uncover the truth behind the biggest story in Rosewood, but the secrets they are hiding only cause problems. I preferred that the TV series brought them together sooner, making it easier to piece together the clues.
The Pretty Little Liars series is especially relatable for teenagers because each girl is so different: Aria is creative and passionate about writing; Spencer is an overachieving academic, seeking the truth about the family; Hanna is the insecure girl and Emily is athletic while learning to embrace herself. Ultimately, their distinct individuality is what makes their friendship so strong. I loved Killer because it kept me engaged until the very end and I became very invested in each character’s story. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery with many twists, turns and secrets.
