1984 by George Orwell
Hi, my name is Judah and I like to play soccer, ski and play tennis.
The book 1984, written by George Orwell, is an interesting read about what it would be like to live under an all-powerful government. This book takes place in Oceania and mainly follows the character of Winston Smith. In this place, you are always being watched by telescreens that are hidden all throughout the town and even in his own home! A new language is also invented called “Newspeak” which makes language very simple eliminating any way to form rebellious thoughts. The government figure of “Big Brother” is the one monitoring everything that is happening in the town and will punish anyone who goes against what it says.
Winston Smith is a part of the middle class working at the “Ministry of Truth” where he changes historical records to appease “Big Brother.” Winston is secretly trying to overthrow the big government by working together with the “Brotherhood.” All is seeming to go well with his plans until he is betrayed by one of his partners in the “Brotherhood” for committing a “Thought Crime” which is seen as the worst crime anyone can commit. He then spends several months being tortured in prison for committing a “Thought Crime” until he is eventually released and returns to his normal job doing it with respect for “Big Brother.”
