Slugfest by Gordon Korman
Hi my name is Kire. I am a 8th grader who loves to read and write book reviews!
Slugfest by Gordon Korman is a hilarious fiction novel about a group of kids who have to go to summer school.
The book starts with us learning that Yash, a middle school top athlete, has to go to summer school to make up missed P.E. classes even though he is the top athlete in his town. When Yash arrives at his P.E. class, everyone in the class soon realizes that the summer school P.E. teacher, Ms. Finnerty, is not your regular teacher. She bakes all sorts of desserts and in P.E. they just play childish games like duck, duck, goose and tag. One student, Arabella, is especially on her case about it and is determined to prove that Ms. Finnerty is not a qualified teacher. This ends up being quite the conflict as now everyone else in the class, including Yash, is trying to stop Arabella from getting Ms. Finnerty fired as if she gets fired, they worry they won’t get the full credit for P.E. and won’t move on to high school.
Fast forward to the end of the novel, the P. E. class decides to make a flag football team for an upcoming tournament in hopes they can prove to everyone that they aren’t super unathletic like everyone thinks. What’s the fate of Ms. Finnerty and what happens at the flag football game? Read Slugfest to find out.
I found Slugfest to be a really fun book to read. It was heartwarming and positive and it had lots of humor which I really enjoyed.
