Simon Sort of Says by Erin Bow
Hi my name is Kire. I am a 8th grader who loves to read and write book reviews!
Simon Sort of Says is a fiction novel by Erin Bow. The main character in this book, just as the name suggests, is 12-year-old Simon.
Simon lives in Omaha, Nebraska until a tragic school shooting in which everyone in Simon’s class is killed except him. This causes Simon and his family to move to Grin and Bear it, Nebraska, which is a tiny town that doesn’t allow anyone to have internet as it is a “national quiet zone.” Here Simon is nervous to go to school as he doesn’t want people to find out that he was in a school shooting. As Simon starts school, everything is normal, and Simon tries to blend in as much as he can. He even makes two new friends, Agate and Kevin. This ends very quickly, and everyone finds out that he was the only survivor of a school shooting at his old school. This sends Simon into a spiral but luckily his new-found friends have an idea to fake a message from space with a microwave and hopefully distract everyone from Simon’s story. This ends up working and through this project, Simon is able to let go of his past and what people think.
I found this book to be quite interesting and fun to read. There was a lot of humor and throughout the book there were a lot of events that I wasn’t expecting. Saying that, there were also times in the book that felt a bit boring. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for an interesting and humorous read.
