Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl
My name is Bria, I am in 8th grade and in my free time I enjoy skiing.
Neverworld Wake is a dark, atmospheric YA novel that blends psychological mystery with a surreal time-loop premise. The story follows Beatrice Hartley and her four estranged friends—Whitley, Cannon, Kipling, and Martha—who reunite at Wincroft, a secluded seaside estate. Following a tragic accident, they find themselves trapped in a strange reality where time resets every night, controlled by a mysterious figure known as the Keeper.
In “Neverworld,” they are forced to confront unresolved trauma revolving around their friend Jim, who died a year earlier under suspicious circumstances. To escape the “Neverworld,” they must solve the mystery of his death and then anonymously vote for only one of them to return to the real world. This impossible choice creates intense tension, as the friends must decide who is most worthy of life while their own sanity begins to fray over countless repetitions of the same day.
The novel has just the right amount of mystery, creepiness, and complex friendship dynamics. It teaches themes of accountability, consequences, and the weight of secrets. The setting feels both beautiful and claustrophobic, perfectly matching the high stakes of the characters’ predicament. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a thought-provoking YA mystery fiction with a unique sci-fi twist.
