Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
Hi my name is Kire. I am a 8th grader who loves to read and write book reviews!
Into Thin Air is a nonfiction book that explains the Mount Everest disaster of 1996 from Jon Krakauer’s perspective. The book starts with Krakauer setting up the story, he explains the role of sherpas, the other teams on the mountain, and all the people on his team. In the next chapters, nothing really bad happens; the team starts climbing up the mountain.
Eventually, things start to go wrong. On the day when Jon Krakauer’s team makes a summit attempt there are a variety of things that happen. Once Krakauer makes it to the summit, he begins the long journey down to camp four. As he is climbing down, he realizes that none of his teammates are near him and that he is pretty much all alone. This becomes more and more concerning as a huge storm begins to roll in.
Luckily, Krakauer makes it to the next camp and gets some sleep having no idea that most of his teammates are dead and the ones that aren’t are in critical condition. We later find out just how many teammates are dead and exactly everyone’s condition. Overall, Krakauer’s team has pretty much fallen apart and the people who are still living are deeply scarred with the fact that the rest of their team has died.
I found Into Thin Air to be a pretty interesting story although at times it definitely became a bit boring. Anyone who is trying to learn about what climbing Everest is like should read this book. All in all, I found Into Thin Air to be a decent read.
