Children’s Librarian Judy Zimmer recommends Ferris by Kate Dicamillo

Kate Dicamillo does it again. Another heartfelt, warm and humorous chapter book. This book stars Ferris, a young girl set to enter her fifth-grade year in elementary school.
The story is filled with a collection of quirky characters, including a grandmother who is communing with a ghost, an uncle who resides in the basement and is painting the whole world, and a younger sister who is intent is not following the rules.
Through her close bond with her grandmother, she learns about love, loss and the complexities of family relationships.
The setting is a small town in the mid-twentieth century and includes references to that era as well as literary quotes by Walt Whitman and Mark Twain. This book would be a good read aloud for a fifth-grade class and could provide many jumping off points for discussion.
Kate DiCamillo once again delivers a though provoking, entertaining chapter book for both the young and the not so young.
It’s available in print, ebook and eaudiobook. Highly recommended. Find it in our collection here.
