When Stars Are Scattered is an amazing, heartwarming read by Omar Mohamed and Victoria Jamieson. The book is about two brothers who live in a refugee camp in Kenya because of a war in Somalia, their home. The refugee camp is called Dadaab. There is never enough food or water, it’s very crowded, and life there is extremely hard.
Omar Mohamed, the main character, has a brother named Hassan. Hassan can’t talk, except for the word, “Hooyo!” Omar and Hassan do not have any parents who live with them besides Fatuma, their foster mom. Omar finally decides to go to school after many years of being home with Hassan, but it would mean that he would have to leave Hassan. Since Hassan doesn’t know how to talk, and loves to explore, he could end up in some serious danger. Eventually, Omar and Hassan overcome many challenges and obstacles that stand in their way. They grow up and finish strong.
In my opinion, When Stars Are Scattered is one of the best books I’ve ever read and is one of my favorites. I loved Omar’s story. The entire book was inspiring. It showed me how hard life can be in different places. I recommend this book to everyone who loves historic and uplifting books. I think When Stars Are Scattered is an inspiring must-read for everyone.
