Mexikid by Pedro Martin

Mexikid is a graphic novel that follows a 13-year-old boy named Pedro Martin as his family goes on a road trip to Mexico to get his grandfather and bring him to live in the United States with the rest of the family.
Along the way, Pedro explains how his family is a very Mexican family and the troubles that come with having eight siblings. This book is set in the 1970’s so Pedro expresses the things he and his siblings do to keep entertained like playing with action figures including the “Pee Pee Man” and reading comic books. When they eventually get to Mexico, Pedro finds out just how cool his grandpa is and he becomes Pedro’s idol. Suddenly, the whole road trip was worth the fights with his siblings and the troubles along the way.
I thought that the drawings in this book did a really good job of complementing the story. They were well drawn and often helped with the humorous aspects of the book. I don’t read graphic novels often, but I read Mexikid for the Idaho Battle of the Books and I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I found it to be super funny which made the read much more fun. Overall, I found Mexikid to be a good read and I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a humorous story about family and Mexico.
