The First State of Being by Erin Entrada Kelly
Hi my name is Kire. I am a 8th grader who loves to read and write book reviews!
The First State of Being is a fiction novel that explores themes of family, friendship, and time travel. The main character, Michael, is living in the year 1999 and he spends his time preparing for Y2K as he thinks that when the year changes to 2000, the world will go into a full apocalypse. He steals canned foods from the grocery store in hopes that he will have enough saved up to keep him and his mom prepared.
One day, when Michael is hanging around with Mr. Moseley, the maintenance man at the apartment buildings that Michael lives in, they notice a boy who is wearing weird clothes and seems confused. Later, we find out that this strange boy is named Ridge and is actually from the year 2199. At first Michael and his babysitter can’t believe it, but through Ridge’s actions they start to realize that he is telling the truth. Eventually, Ridge’s time machine that he took to get to 1999 breaks, and he is stuck in the wrong year. Will Ridge make it back to 2199 or will he be stuck in the wrong year forever?
Overall, I found this story to be heartwarming and exciting. Anyone who is looking for a fun book to read will enjoy this story.
